Brother DCP-9040CN Review
The Brother DCP-9040CN is a color multifunction laser unit capable of printing, scanning and copying in a relatively small package, though it marks a considerable jump in product size and cost from the company's black and white small office and home office models.
The DCP-9040CN measures 17" by 19.2" by 19" and weighs 17.2 lbs, marking a substantial jump in weight from its predecessors. It will likely require its own desk, table, or credenza to sit comfortably and cannot be transported as easily as other similar Brother printers. The printer produces pages at an industry-standard speed of 21 pages per minute in both black and in color, likely satisfactory for most home office and small office users. Newer models can produce documents at higher speeds than this, however, such as between 50 and 60 pages per minute.
The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 2400 by 600 dpi, consistent with most other color laser printers.
The 9040CN has a 250-sheet input capacity and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, though this cannot be expanded like it can in other Brother laser models.
The printer ships with a 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 port, making it easy to connect this printer either to a network or to most systems.
The printer ships with 64MB of memory, expandable to 576MB of memory if desired. Users who regularly make multiple copies using the ADF may be interested in expanding its memory capacity, as large copying jobs will quickly fill the printer's memory.
The 9040CN is capable of both black and white and color copies on a flatbed style copier. It has a 35-document ADF and can produce documents at a maximum speed of 17 copies per minute in either black or color. It can perform standalone copies if desired or necessary. It reduces documents as small as 25% and enlarges them up to 400%, can sort, and can produce 2-in-1 or 4-in-1 documents, which reduce 2 or 4 pages of images down to 1 page.
The scanner is capable of black and white and color scanning at a maximum interpolated scan resolution of 19200 dpi and an optical scan resolution of 1200 by 2400. It has an input color scan bit depth of 48 bits. It can export documents into the TIFF, BMP, MAX, JPEG, and PDF formats, and performs scan-to email, image, OCR, file, and FTP.
The printer's main paper tray supports printing to Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, B5, B6, A6 and Folio sized sheets. The printer's multi-purpose tray supports printing to Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, B5, B6, A6, envelopes, and custom sized documents sized between 2.75 and 8.5" in width and 4.57 and 16" in length. The printer also supports printing to plain paper, bond paper, envelope paper, and labels.
The printer has a monochrome LCD with a backlight.
The 9040CN includes support for a large number of network protocols in both IPv4 and IPv6 configurations, making it easy to network in a large number of environments. It also supports secure printing.
The lack of paper expansion may disqualify this printer from use in office environments. Even many small offices go through upwards of 500 sheets - one ream - of paper daily, and choosing this printer may mean multiple trips to reload and added downtime into what may already be a stressed working environment. Unlike other Brother printers, this model does not support Brother's Android app for easy remote control of the printer.
The printer does not ship with any cables other than the AC power cord, making it necessary to purchase USB cables or network cables from elsewhere in order to ensure an easy configuration and setup.
