When do I Replace a Drum Unit in the Brother HL-1040 Laser Printer?
As any other consumable, the drum unit has to be replaced periodically. The lifespan of the installed drum unit depends on the printing patterns and environment. For example, a new drum unit lasts approx. 20,000 A4 pages at 20 pages per job. You should replace the installed drum unit when/if:

There is a noticeable deterioration in the output print quality

How to Install a Drum Unit in the Brother HL-1040 Laser Printer
In the first step of the replacement procedure, you must open the top cover, and then pull the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly out of the Brother HL-1040 Laser Printer. After that, you must turn the toner cartridge counterclockwise until it stops, and then remove it from the exhausted drum unit. Now, you must take the new drum unit out of the protective bag, and then shake it six-seven times horizontally. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must insert the toner cartridge into the new drum unit, and then turn it clockwise until it stops. Once the toner cartridge is installed, you must insert the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the laser printer, and then finalize the replacement procedure by closing the top cover. Please note that your Brother HL-1040 Laser Printer will eject the drum starter sheet automatically.
