BROTHER MFC-8640N DRUM

The drum unit is a consumable component that has to be replaced periodically (after approx. 20,000 A4 pages at 5% coverage). The actual drum life depends on various factors, such as printing environmental conditions, type of paper, size of paper, and percentage of page coverage. You can check the drum life counter from the control panel by selecting [2. Fax] – [0. Miscellaneous] – [Drum Life].
You should replace the installed drum unit when/if:

The message [Change Drum Soon] is displayed – Print quality cannot be guaranteed because the installed drum unit has reached the replacement threshold. You should replace the installed drum unit if/when print quality is/become unsatisfactory.

One or several of the listed print quality problems occur(s). Please note that you can solve some print quality problems by cleaning the primary corona wire of the drum unit (Please refer to ‘’How to Install a Toner Cartridge in the Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center’’).

Initially, you must open the front cover of your Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center, and then remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly by pulling it slowly and carefully towards you. After that, you must press and hold down the lock lever that is located on the right side of the exhausted drum unit, and pull the toner cartridge out of the exhausted component. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must unpack the new drum unit, and then install the toner cartridge into the new component. Now, you must insert the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the Brother MFC-8640N Multifunction Center, and then press [Clear/Back] – [1] to reset the drum life counter. Finally, you must close the front cover of the laser printer.
