Overview:

Brother Multi-Function Center 9600 is a laser printer/copier/fax machine is the go-to device for small-business and home offices. This machine is part of Brother’s exceptional “MFC” line of printers, a proud family of printer with which 9600 shares many of its best features. MFC-9600 is loaded with useful, practical features such as user-friendly one- touch dial, automatic redial, automatic answering, as well as Windows compatibility. This machine is designed to run on Windows NT 4.0 (or later) computers, which means it is quite tolerant of many older PCs while at the same time maintaining the ability to function with newer home computers. This machine also features a more-than-capable scanning function and a fast fax modem.

Pros:

MFC-9600 prints at up to 12 ppm with a max resolution of 600 by 600 dpi on plain paper. With a 250-sheet loading capacity, this machine can more than handle large, continuous printing tasks. MFC-9600 comes with 8MB memory convenient for storing print jobs for completion at a later date. An economy printing mode is available, as well, allowing the user to save up to 50% of the normal toner usage during print jobs. This setting will save the operator boatloads of money in the long run, and the print quality of economy mode is more than adequate for most of your basic printing needs.

Brother MFC-9600 features a 14400 bps modem. MFC-9600 features a Super Fine function which allows for high quality transmission of very small print. MFC-9600 also allows you to send faxes directly from a Windows computer. Fax quality is enhanced by MFC-9600’s 64 levels of Grey Scale, as well as Automatic/Super Light/Super Dark printing settings makes for flexible faxing muscles. This machine can print data from your personal computer at the same time it sends or receives a fax, and even while performing scanning operations. With the SmithMicro software included with this device, you can send documents as faxes directly from your PC. This last feature can come in very handy, especially when a client needs a fax right then and there and there’s not a lot of time to find the original manuscripts.

The MFC-9600’s scanning function makes for sharp, precise reproductions of the original material at 50-200% original size. This machine’s scanner operates with 256 grayscale levels.

Cons:

This machine is a very capable multifunction office center, but the paranoid consumer may wish to go with a newer model device in order to have the peace of mind that parts and supplies for their investment will still be available for years to come, as MFC-9600 is starting to get a little long in the teeth. Replacement parts and toner are still available for this machine, and will probably continue to be for years, but who wants to be stuck with a capable, multifunction machine with a broken-down motor and no easy way to get replacement parts? Not me.
