Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW Review

Overview:

While the 21 page per minute print speed of the Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW is only so-so, it offers some excellent built in duplexing as well as wi-fi compatibility. This full color device operates with semi expensive cost per page, but is currently cheap to buy up front.

Pros:

As the Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW’s top print speeds, which are the same for color and black and white, slowly age, the device becomes less and less appealing when compared to all the newer, faster, and even cheaper units. That being said, the device is still capable of churning out some pretty impressive print and copy material in full color, party with the help of its large 50 page reversing automatic document feeder.

A maximum monthly duty cycle ensures that the Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW can keep up with some pretty heavy print volume demands, though these will quickly grow costly when printing in color, which is why a heavier duty mid sized copy machine is usually a better option for this type of demand. Still, with a warranty included as well, it is nice to rest easy knowing that the unit can pump out some serious material when the demand is there.

When printing to letter sized paper, the Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW can pull off a duplex print in color as well as monochrome at about 10 pages per minute. Printing to single sided output will give you 21 pages per minute but copying from duplex material will slow this down some. Regardless, the unit is not the most outstanding when it comes to print speed, but it does the trick.

Print resolution can be set all the way up to 2400 x 600 dots per inch which, while not exactly photo quality, is a lot better than some other brands’ 600 x 600 dot per inch maxes that really belong on monochrome devices and not full color units such as this one. Optical scanning has a max res of only 600 x 600 dots per inch, but this can be remedied with the unit’s interpolated scan of 9600 x 9600 dots per inch when truly high quality is required.

Other scan features include rotation and a very handy searchable PDF mode that creates a file with searchable text. High compression PDF, PDFs, JPEG files, TIFF files, and BMPs are all selectable for scanning, which can be done directly to a USB device as well as a host PC.

Cons:

Canon advertises the Canon ImageCLASS MF8380CDW costs per page at 3.7 cents for black and white and 16.4 cents for color. Some printers are capable of getting color costs per page down to around 10 cents, meaning this unit will, eventually, cost considerably more to use. Monochrome prints can even be cut in half, depending on the printer.

The default mode being set to duplex on this unit may annoy some, though Canon seems to be pushing this default setting pretty hard by changing all their new printers to print this way. Either way, it can be changed back to single sided printing (simplex, if you will) easily enough with the help of the fairly comprehensive menu system.
