Canon imageRUNNER 2200 Review

Overview:

With its non-standard network card and poor print speeds, the Canon imageRUNNER 2200 is an altogether unimpressive piece of hardware that is far past its prime. It offers a better than average print quality and a certain degree of expandability, keeping it from being completely obsolete, but with cheaper, faster, and more powerful units available, it should really be of no interest to the serious buyer.

Pros:

Despite the device’s poor print speeds, it somehow manages to pull of a speedy first copy time of only 6.6 seconds when using the duplex automatic document feeder and an even faster 5.8 seconds when copying from the platen glass. The duplex feeder works well with the duplex print capabilities, allowing the device to work well with two sided material as a whole. When double sided material goes in, double sided copies come out. That alone makes the Canon imageRUNNER 2200 stand out from lower end devices.

Many scanners utilize an interpolated scan method to enhance image quality, but the Canon imageRUNNER 2200 is capable of interpolated printing as well. With enhanced print quality, the device takes its 600 x 600 dot per inch standard print resolution and boosts it up to a stunning 2400 x 600 dots per inch which, even in black and white, is sure to look sharp.

The Canon imageRUNNER 2200 is equipped with not one but two 500 sheet paper trays in the base model, allowing for two entire reams of paper to be stored in sizes all the way up to 11 x 17 inch Ledger. An additional 50 sheet bypass tray is present as well and is useful for loading special media types and thick paper up to 34 lbs. without having to unload the standard paper supply. The unit can also expand its paper storage all the way up to a total of 4,550 sheets which turns it into a floor standing model that requires a stand.

The finishing and hardware expansion options of the Canon imageRUNNER 2200 are impressive, though it would have been nice to have a standard Ethernet card. Finishing options include saddle stitching, hold punching, and stapling, as well as basic paper sorting and improved output capacity.

Faxing is not standard either, but a Super G3 fax board can be added and includes 128 MBs of memory that is not expandable. Transmission speed is about 3 seconds per page which is to be expected. Unfortunately, the Canon imageRUNNER 2200’s lineup of fax functions is more limited than one would find in other multifunctional units from Canon.

Cons:

The best print speed that the Canon imageRUNNER 2200 can offer is for letter sized paper at 22 pages per minute, and it only goes downhill from there. Letter R prints at 18 pages per minute while legal sized paper takes a hit all the way down to 14 pages per minute. Through some strange miracle, ledger sized paper actually prints faster than legal sized at a whopping 16 pages per minute, and all copy per minute times are equally as poor.
