Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 Review

Overview:

Canon is calling their relatively new network oriented architecture imagePlatform and units such as the Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 that are built upon this structure are both impressively fast and exceptionally good at multitasking. Designed specifically for office sharing, users will no longer have to worry about traffic jams at the printer, as this unit can take on a multitude of document handling needs at once.

Pros:

Pumping out 33 pages per minute at high image quality, the Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 gets the job done quickly no matter what it is. Even though the device is compact, it is equipped with a 5.1 GB image server that can store a multitude of data internally, effectively making the unit into a stand alone printer. Document stored on the hard disk can be accessed directly from the printers menu and printed without delay.

With Canon’s RAPID Fusing System, energy costs are reduced noticeably and warm up times are all but eliminated. This means that even from sleep mode, the device’s first page out time will remain astonishingly fast. From a dead shut off, the device will still take a full 29 seconds to warm up, so it is not the best unit for those who leave their printer off most of the time.

As if the standard 1,050 sheets of paper storage wasn’t enough, the Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 has paper expansion options that can open up the storage space to a grand total of 4,550 sheets which then turns the device into a floor standing unit, and yet it remains compact enough for a limited work space. On top of standard paper, the unit is also equipped with a stack bypass that accepts paper up to 32 lbs in thickness.

What would a network based printer be without Ethernet support? The Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 is simple and easy to connect to an office or home network with the help of the built in Ethernet port, though a standard high speed USB port is left open as well for single PC hosting.

The Canon ImageRUNNER 3300 is not without its additional hardware options. A one tray finisher, saddle stitching finisher, and puncher unit are all available to help with special paper processing. The device also accepts a Super G3 fax board as a option, as fax functionality is not standard with this device. Also non standard is a duplexing automatic document feeder; the ADF that comes with the base model is only capable of simplex feeding.

Cons:

If you want the high powered hardware found on the Canon ImageRUNNER 3300, be prepared to pay for it. The 3300 is truly a fully stocked unit that is built to be abused with its 120,000 page per month duty cycle and network friendly features, but it does not come cheap. The unit costs considerably more than other multifunctional devices that, for certain applications, will work just as well. If you’re thinking about purchasing an imagePlatform based machine, be sure that it is something your business will take advantage of.
