Product Manuals
Replacing the Toner Cartridge in a Dell 1600n Laser Printer
The Dell 1600n will first display a message that reads TONER LOW on its LCD screen as the life of its current toner cartridge begins to come to a close. At this point, it is time to order a new toner cartridge as the current one will be empty soon. When it finally does die completely, the machine will react by displaying the TONER EMPTY REPLACE TONER message.

Begin toner replacement by opening the front cover of the unit by its handle. Gently remove the cartridge by pulling it straight out while holding it by its small central handle. This cartridge can now be recycled but should be stored in a plastic bag in the mean time to avoid toner spillage. The bag that a new cartridge comes in is the perfect place to keep an old one. If at any point leaked toner does come in contact with skin or clothing, be sure to use cold water to rinse it out as hot water will set the toner.

New toner cartridges must be shaken around to distribute the toner inside them evenly. For the Dell 1600n toner cartridge, it must be held in the center by its handle with one hand and rolled from side to side to distribute the toner in the best possible way.

There are arrows in the printer labeling how the toner cartridge must be aligned when inserting it. Line these arrows up with the cartridge and slide it into the printer until it locks into position. Close the front cover and installation is complete.
Installing a New Rubber Pad for the ADF in a Dell 1600n Laser Printer
It is part of regular maintenance for the Dell 1600n to occasionally replace the device’s rubber pad that is used by its automatic document feeder. The begin replacement, open the ADF cover. The roller will be visible and accessible underneath.

The bushing at one end of the roller is how it is held in place and therefore this side of the roller must be rotated in order to free it from the printer. The roller can then be removed from the printer. The small rubber pad will now be able to be removed and must be peeled off of the device from left to right.

Insert the new pad into the place of the old one then push the roller back down into its slot. Rotate the bushing clockwise so that it locks into position, then close the ADF cover.
Cleaning the Dell 1600n Laser Printer
There are a few things to remember when cleaning the Dell 1600n. It is very important to use only a dry cloth when cleaning the interior of the unit, though the exterior can be cleaned with a damp one. The power should always be unplugged when cleaning.

To clean the scanner, open the scanning glass and use a slightly damp lint free cloth to wipe down the scanning glass. Make sure there are no spots stuck to the glass whatsoever as these will show up in scans. Be sure to also clean the thin ADF glass as well, then wipe the document cover and close the cover once dry.

Dell 1600N Review

Overview:

Operating at only 22 pages per minute, the real draw of the Dell 1600N is its low price point, as well as its built in Ethernet port that could potentially be very useful for sharing the device over a small network. The unit is not without its flaws, but is a generally solid device that shouldn’t disappoint, especially with its low cost per page.

Pros:

Dell advertises the color of the Dell 1600N to be, “midnight gray/ion silver.” While the actual result of the color design is not quite as dramatic as its name, it is an attractive piece and would look good on one’s personal desktop just as it would in the office. The unit is built for semi light duty, being rated at 15,000 impressions per month maximum with a recommended monthly duty cycle much lower.

The piece is not capable of color printing and thus is best for a user whose requirements range mostly in the document printing realm, and its mediocre print resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch make it not quite suitable for things like line drawings and the like. Still, the unit does perform up to par with what it was designed for which is primarily text printing.

With dimensions of about 18 x 17 x 18 inches (W x D x H), the Dell 1600N is reasonably sized. Its weight of only 34 pounds is not bad either, and makes the device easy to maneuver and move around if necessary. When copying, zoom ratios of 25 to 400% are optional and do not require a host PC to adjust thanks to a respectable menu system and easy to use dedicated keys.

Scanning can be done optically at the quality of 600 x 1200 dots per inch, which is not ideal, but it can be done in color and an interpolated 4800 x 4800 scan is also selectable, though using this feature will be painfully slow and users who will often need higher quality photo level scans will definitely want to look elsewhere. For dealing with simple documents, however, the optical scan is fairly speedy and accurate. Additional software can aid users in scanning directly to an editable text format as well.

Cons:

At only 22 pages per minute, the Dell 1600N is not the fastest performer on the market. In fact, it frankly falls quite short in this category. In this day and age, it is not uncommon to find laser monochrome printers in the one and two hundred dollar range that can pump out 30 pages per minute easily. This dates the 1600N to some degree and makes it less attractive to those looking for a speed machine.

While the standard memory of 32 MBs is not entirely atrocious, this is still a little light for dealing with things like complex print material such as mixed text and imagery. Slowdown will definitely occur when dealing with things like PDF files. Memory enhancement is an option, but the unit strangely only supports up to 160 MBs in memory.
