What's the difference between a drum and a toner cartridge? A toner cartridge is just that: a cartridge that contains toner. The drum does all the work.

Product Manuals
When do I Replace a Drum Unit in the Dell Black & White 1720DN?
The drum unit installed in your Dell Black & White 1720DN laser printer is an important consumable component, which must be replaced before the complete exhaustion of its print resource. Therefore, the built-in system is constantly monitoring the status of the installed drum unit, and it will notify you when this consumable component is near or at the end of its useful life. There are three signals/signs, which are indicating an exhausted drum unit in your monochrome laser printer. These signals/signs are listed and described below.

 The overall print quality is gradually decreasing and/or there are constantly reappearing print quality issues – The installed drum unit is at the end of its useful life, and it needs to be replaced soon.

 The [Replace Drum] LED is blinking – This signal indicates a nearly exhausted drum unit. You should install a new drum unit soon after the initial appearance of this signal, in order to avoid a variety of print quality issues, such as background fogging, blurred images, blank copies, solid copies, white banding, and/or black banding.

 The [Replace Drum] and the [Error] LEDs are blinking – This signal indicates a non-operational mode caused by a completely exhausted drum unit, which means that you won't be able to complete your current task or to print new documents. You must install a new drum unit, in order to be restored the normal functionality of your monochrome laser device.

It is always better if you keep a spare/new drum unit for your Dell Black & White 1720DN laser printer in stock, but please store this consumable component on a pallet or shelf (not directly on the floor), where the temperature is approx. 21degreesC/70degreesF with a relative humidity of approx. 40%. The complete drum unit replacement procedure is included below.
How to Install a Drum Unit in the Dell Black & White 1720DN
You must start the drum unit replacement procedure by opening the front cover of your monochrome laser printer. Then, you must remove the exhausted drum unit along with the attached toner cartridge from the machine by grabbing the handle of the toner cartridge and pulling towards you. After that, you must disassemble both components by pushing the lock release button of the toner cartridge, and then pull the toner cartridge out of the exhausted drum unit. Now, you must unpack the new drum unit, and then align the white rollers of the toner cartridge with the arrows, which are stamped on the tracks of the new drum unit. Once the toner cartridge is correctly aligned, you must slide it along the guides/tracks of the new consumable component until it clicks into place, and then install the new drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the printer. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must reset the drum unit's counter by pressing and holding down the [Cancel] button, until all LEDs on the control panel are lit. Finally, you must close the front cover of your Dell Black & White 1720DN laser printer.
