Toshiba E Studio 230 Review

Overview:

The versatility of the Toshiba E Studio 230 copy machine helps to make up for its rather limited 23 page per minute print speed. This affordable document handling system is quite capable of handling numerous monochrome printing and copying tasks, though not with the level of overall performance found in newer devices.

Pros:

At heart, the Toshiba E Studio 230 is a copy machine. This is evident in its robust 999 multiple copy capability as well as its array of copy functions that include reduction and enlargement in ratios of 25 – 400%. An extremely long list of additional copy functions are incorporated into the hardware and they include access code programming, 8 in 1 copy, alternation, annotation, job building, job memory, zooming, page numbering, and sheet insertion just to name a few.

On top of basic printing and scanning, the Toshiba E Studio 230 is a fully capable fax machine as well. The device’s facsimile functions are made possible by the common Super G3 fax modem incorporated into the hardware. The reversing automatic document feeder that sits atop the unit allows for double sided duplex scanning and faxing along with basic single sided input, and up to 100 fax jobs to up to 1,000 destinations can be input for delivery at once.

E-filing is the Toshiba E Studio 230’s unofficial fifth function and is made possible by the device’s built in 40 GB hard disk. With built in memory to this degree, users are allowed to create their own digital folders for storage and future retrieval of thousands of pages worth of data.

Basic scanning can also be done by using either the automatic document feeder or the flip top scan glass found on the unit. Using the glass allows for the advantage of scanning three dimensional objects, but the RADF can scan data at a rate of up to 50 pages per minute, making it the preferred choice for sending large faxes for obvious reasons. 

Cons:

A print speed of only 23 pages per minute makes the Toshiba E Studio 230 considerably slower than anything you will find being released today in the realm of laser copy machines and, for that matter, also in consumer level areas such as personal inkjet printers that often hit and exceed the 30 page per minute mark.

The Toshiba E Studio 230’s duty cycle is more suited for a personal laser printer of MFC than a full blown mid sized copy machine. The unit is capable of putting out a maximum of 74,000 pages per month with a much lower recommended monthly duty. This means that constant usage of the machine may cause mechanical problems whereas a sturdier unit would not be faced with the same drawback. When problems do arise, the unit’s included on year warranty may come in handy, but it is always better to avoid problems in the first place.

The unit’s print resolution tops out at the awkward level of 2400 x 600 dots per inch, but scanning and copying can only be done at the very disappointing quality of 600 x 600 dots per inch, resulting in suffering image quality.
