Overview:

It should be said straight off that the Toshiba E Studio 451C’s primary downfall as a multifunctional unit is its painfully slow color print speed. This otherwise extensive color document handling station can crank out an impressive 45 pages per minute when dealing in black and white, but only a pitiful 11 pages per minute when printing or copying color, making it a lot less desirable than it could have been had it used a single pass color print method.

Pros:

The strong areas of the Toshiba E Studio 451C include pretty much every one of its specifications when dealing in black and white. It is not until color printing comes into play that the unit really starts to fall short. That being said, its 45 ppm speed and extensive multifunctional hardware set make it a great all around device that is semi affordable as well.

For a 2005 unit, the Toshiba E Studio 451C has stood the test of time rather well. It includes a built in hard drive as a standard feature which means that data can be scanned into the machine itself without even needing a host PC. This data can then be easily accessed and printed via the enormous menu screen that makes navigating through the printer’s many options easy.

The device’s warm up time of 40 seconds is a little bit longer than one would hope for, but is reasonable considering the amount of hardware packed into the Toshiba E Studio 451C system. This professional grade unit goes above and beyond desktop multifunctional devices; taking standard copy machine features such as 2 on 1 and 4 on 1 copying and pressing them a little further into 8 on 1 copy capabilities.

Connectivity is made quite easy with the Toshiba E Studio 451C’s array of wired connection ports that is supplemented by an Ethernet connection option that makes sharing the unit over a network quite simple. Print quality can be boosted up to 2400 x 600 dots per inch, though many users will probably prefer the faster print quality of 600 x 600 dots per inch. Scan and copy resolutions are also reasonably high, as expected.

Cons:

With a color print speed of only 11 pages per minute, the Toshiba E Studio 451C is far from up to par with the mid sized copy machine standard that is currently situated roughly around 30 pages per minute. The device uses a color print method that was common when the device was first manufactured in 2005: the four pass method. This early style required a full printing pass for each of the four colors and therefore took four times as long to produce a color piece of output as a printer’s monochrome speed, so even with 45 pages per minute of monochrome power, the printer’s color capabilities are very limited.
