HP Color LaserJet 2550n Review
The HP Color LaserJet 2550n series are printers that provide professional, high-quality documents for an affordable price. With a simple interface, the printer is a constant for work-groups and small businesses that need a smallish printer that can be networked for workplace communication. It dishes out decent color output and is an outstanding value. It stands 14.8-inches tall, 19-inches wide, and 17.8-inches deep with a moderate weight of 53.4 pounds. On a side note, this printer has been discontinued for sale at Hewlett & Packard, but is still available from retailers on the web.
In lieu of the Motorola processor capable of speeds up to 265 Mega Hertz, this compact printer can dish out text-based prints like nobody's business at 19 pages per minute. Print resolution is standard at 600 x 600 dots per inch with no room for improvement except for the HP ImageREt 2400 technologies incorporated. The HP ImageREt technology consolidates the resolution to 2400 dots per inch quality. Thanks to the standard 64 Mega Bytes of RAM, complex documents and images, can be printed. Users can expand the RAM up to 192 Mega Bytes maximum with SDRAM- DIMM 100-pin cards. The printer comes with the HP Toolbox software. HP Toolbox software will enable the user to align and clean the print-heads without manual effort. The software is greate for hands-free calibration. HP Web JetAdmin software enables users to administer a slew of nodes and printers. It can be used for HP and non-HP devices. It is a solution for remote installation, monitoring, maintaining, troubleshooting, and fortifying security protocols. The software is a network administrators tool to save time, protect investments, control usage, control costs, and other management features. It is a single tool for conducting remote diagnostics, creating device groups, configuration, and installation of firmware. The control panel is straightforward and accessible for the visually-impaired. It is located on the top-right of the printer. Black, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta cartridge lights are color-coded and flashes on/off in appropriate situations. The printer statuses are also color-coded and lights up when appropriate. The power-switch is placed on the left-hand side of the printer; this is appropriate because there is less chance of accidently turning off the power by interacting with the control panel. The optional tray 2 is included with the 2550n series. Tray-2 can hold up to 250-sheets, thereby reducing the times it needs to be restocked. Users who want utilize the optional 500-sheet tray 3 must install the tray-2 first. An embedded Jetdirect print server is included in the 2550n model. The printer facilitates the Energy Star label because it significantly reduces overhead power-consumption when not in operation. Suitable media types compatible with the printer are Plain Paper, Labels, Glossy Paper, Envelopes, Transparencies, and Cards. Maximum document size for the printer is 8.5 x 14-inches. Media sizes that are best for the printer are B5 (6.93 x 9.83"), Executive (7.25 x 10.5") Legal (8.5 x 14"), A5 (8.25 x 11.7"), Letter A Size (8.5 x 11"; 3 x 5"), and JIS B5 (7.17 x 10.12").
There is a wide gap in print-rate between black-based documents and color-based documents. While the printer can dish out around 20 pages per minute in black-based documents, color documents are dreadfully slowed at 4 pages per minute. The printer, by itself, is not powerful enough fulfill networked business requirements. Maybe if, there is more than one printer, this printer would be a sufficient add-on. Consumer reviews make it obvious that this printer is quite noisy during operation. The printer is not capable of scan, fax, or copy.
