When do I Replace a Toner Cartridge in the HP LaserJet 5L Printer?

The lifespan of the toner cartridge installed in your HP LaserJet 5L Printer cannot be specified precisely, because each print job uses different amount of toner. For example, a typical business letter with about 5% page coverage uses approx. 50% less toner than a page of graphics. You can use the HP EconoMode, when printing drafts, to save toner, and resp. to extend the useful life of the installed toner cartridge. Please note that you can select the HP EconoMode from the print-quality menu of the printer software. You should replace the installed toner cartridge, if any of the listed signals and print quality problems appears.

Faded prints – A general indication for a nearly empty toner cartridge. You should install a new toner cartridge.

Staining – The most common cause of this print quality issue is a defective or damaged toner cartridge. It is recommended to replace the installed toner cartridge.

Vertical lines – An indication for an exhausted drum unit. Please note that the drum unit is a component of the installed toner cartridge. Therefore, you should install a new toner cartridge to resolve the problem.

Horizontal stripes – You must make sure that the toner cartridge is installed correctly. Please install a new toner cartridge, if the problem persists.

Repetitive defects – Another indication for an exhausted drum unit. You should replace the toner cartridge.

Black or blank pages – You should try to resolve the issue by reinstalling the toner cartridge. A new toner cartridge must be installed, if the problem persists.

The [Error] LED is on – You must load paper into the input tray, make sure that the toner cartridge is correctly installed, and close all printer covers. Please install a new toner cartridge, if the problem persists. The complete replacement procedure is included below.

How to Install a Toner Cartridge in the HP LaserJet 5L Printer

To install a new toner cartridge in your HP LaserJet 5L Printer, you must open the front cover, and then remove the exhausted toner cartridge by pulling it carefully toward you. In the next step of the installation, you must take the new toner cartridge out of the protective packaging, and shake it 8-10 times from side to side to loosen and evenly distribute the toner. After that, you must remove the sealing tape from the new toner cartridge, and then align the cartridge with the slot, so that the stamped arrows are pointing toward the laser printer. Finally, you must insert the new toner cartridge firmly into the slot, and then close the front cover of your HP LaserJet 5L Printer.

Overview:

The LaserJet 5L is great since it doesn’t take up a lot of space. It is perfect for printing labels, transparencies, and on regular paper. The LaserJet 5L feeds paper vertically down into the printer in a "U" configuration, moving the printed page up and out the top.

Pros:

A variety of paper sizes can be printed with this printer ranging from 3in X 5in up to 8.5in X 14in. The secondary paper tray is perfect for single sheet input and great for printing letterhead, envelopes, and small paper sizes. It comes with 1 MB of RAM. The memory can be upgraded to an 8 MB 5V DRAM memory card.
Thanks to affordable toner cartridges the cost of printing with this printer is really affordable. According to HP, the LaserJet 5L cartridge will print approximately 2500 pages at 5% toner coverage.
Print quality with the LaserJet 5L is outstanding. Images are clear and text copies are readable even when printing smaller fonts. This model is capable of handling your every need.

Cons:

The first major drawback of this printer is that it only prints 4 pages per minute. That is really slow for a printer this day and age. Furthermore the LaserJet 5L tends to jam too often.
