When do I Replace a Toner Cartridge in the HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer?
You can check the status of the toner cartridge installed in your HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer by starting the HP Toolbox and then selecting the [Supplies Status] tab. You should replace the installed toner cartridge if print quality is unsatisfactory, or when any of the listed messages appears.

[CARTRIDGE FAILURE <> Return for replacement] – The installed toner cartridge is defective. You should return the cartridge for a new one. Printing will not continue until the new toner cartridge is installed.

[INSTALL CARTRIDGE] – The built-in monitoring system of your HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer does not detect the toner cartridge. You must verify that the toner cartridge is installed in the approved manner. Please replace the installed toner cartridge if the problem persists.

[ORDER CARTRIDGE <> LESS THAN XXXX PAGES] – The HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer has detected a low toner level. The purpose of this notification is to give you sufficient time to order a new toner cartridge. You should order a new toner cartridge soon.

[REPLACE CARTRIDGE] – The installed toner cartridge is empty. Please note that the HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer will continue printing until it reaches a drum-out condition, but print quality may become unsatisfactory. You must install a new toner cartridge.
How to Install a Toner Cartridge in the HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer
Initially, you must turn the LaserJet printer off, and then disconnect all cables from the rear panel. After that, you must open the front cover of your HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer, turn the lock release lever down, and then remove the exhausted toner cartridge by pulling it straight towards you. Now, you must use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe any residue from the toner-cartridge cavity, the registration roller, and the paper path area. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must unpack the new toner cartridge, and then shake it several times from side to side. Once the new toner cartridge is prepared, you must align it with the slot, so that the arrow stamped on the new component points towards the main unit, and then slide the new toner cartridge firmly into place. Next, you must turn the green lock release lever back to the locked position, and then close the front cover. After that, you must reconnect all cables, and turn the HP LaserJet 9040 Laser Printer on. Finally, you must print a cleaning page by selecting [Configure Device] – [Print Quality] – [Create Cleaning Page].
How to Install an ADF Assembly in the HP LaserJet 9040
In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the HP LaserJet 9040 off, and then unplug the power cord. After that, you must remove the ADF feeder cover, and then remove the ADF back cover. Now, you must remove the ADF front cover, and then unplug the three connectors. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must unplug the ribbon cable, and then remove the screw from the cable cover. Once you have removed the fixing screw, you must remove the cable cover by releasing the four claws, and then remove the grounding screw. Next, you must remove the cable tie and the saddle clamps, and then unplug the connector. After that, you must loosen the fixing screw, and then detach the cables from the harness. Now, you must remove the fixing screw of the flatbed cable cover, and then slide the flatbed cable cover to the right. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must detach the ADF stopper cover by removing its fixing screw, and then remove the screw from the shaft of the ADF. After that, you must remove the shaft retaining plate by removing the two screws, and then remove the screw from the optical unit. Next, you must slide the optical unit to the right, and then remove the ADF assembly. Finally, you must unpack the new ADF assembly, and then install it by executing the current procedure in reverse order.
How to Install a Weight Solenoid in the HP LaserJet 9040
In the first step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the HP LaserJet 9040 off, and then unplug the power cord. After that, you must open the ADF feeder, and then remove the three fixing screws. Now, you must remove the ADF back cover by releasing the two claws, and then unplug the connector of the exhausted weight solenoid. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must remove the spring, and then remove the two screws securing the exhausted weight solenoid into place. Finally, you must remove the exhausted weight solenoid, and then install the replacement component by executing the current procedure in reverse order.
How to Install a Pickup Motor in the HP LaserJet 9040
Initially, you must make sure that the HP LaserJet 9040 is switched off, and then unplug the power cord. After that, you must remove the back cover of the ADF, and then loosen the three screws of the motor mount. Now, you must loosen the belt by sliding the motor to the right, and then tighten the three screws of the motor mount. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must unplug the connector from the exhausted pickup motor, and then remove the two screws that secure the exhausted component into place. Finally, you must remove the exhausted pickup motor from the HP LaserJet 9040, and then install the replacement component by executing the current procedure in reverse order.
How to Install a Delivery Motor in the HP LaserJet 9040
You must make sure that your HP LaserJet 9040 is switched off, and then unplug the power cord. After that, you must remove the ADF back cover, and then remove the spring. Now, you must remove the screw and the cable clamp, and then remove the three cable ties. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must unplug the connector, and then remove the three screws securing the exhausted delivery motor into place. Once you have removed the two screws, you must remove the exhausted delivery motor along with the mount from the HP LaserJet 9040, and then detach the mount by removing the two screws. Finally, you must unpack the new delivery motor, and then install it by executing the current procedure in reverse order.
How to Install a Flatbed Motor in the HP LaserJet 9040
In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the HP LaserJet 9040 off, and then unplug the power cord. After that, you must remove the flatbed back cover, and then remove the flatbed right cover. Now, you must remove the three screws and the reinforcement plate, and then loosen the two mounting screws. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must slide the exhausted flatbed motor down, and then tighten the two screws of the mount. After that, you must remove the two screws securing the exhausted flatbed motor into place, and then remove the exhausted component. Finally, you must unpack the new flatbed motor, and then install it by executing the current procedure in reverse order.
