The unit is currently very affordable and, though not the fastest laser printer out there, will certainly get the job done for businesses with lighter print and copy needs.

Pros:

The HP LaserJet Pro M1217NFW Multifunction Printer includes not only a built in Ethernet card, but fully wireless connectability as well. Though HP’s Smart Install receives mixed reviews as far as setup software goes, users will save time without having to deal with a wired setup.

A built in 33.6 Kbps fax modem is capable of sending and receiving faxes at rates of about 2 or 3 seconds per page, but user are not limited simply to hard faxes. With the HP LaserJet Pro M1217NFW Multifunction Printer’s fifth function, PC faxing, operators of the device can send and receive faxes through the phone line and modem just as they would a standard fax, but do it directly from their desktop, saving time, paper, and money.

HP also incorporates other conservative features into the device such as an auto on/off feature that keeps the device from consuming power when not in use. When powering the unit up, HP’s instant on technology means zero wait times for warm ups. Instant On technology utilizes LED lighting that has no warm up time as opposed to fluorescent tubing which can take up to 60 seconds to heat up. Furthermore, HP reduces packaging by shipping the printer’s toner cartridge and consumables pre installed in the device.

Cons:

The HP LaserJet Pro M1217NFW Multifunction Printer’s maximum monthly duty cycle is only 8000 impressions per month. While 8000 may seem like a lot, this is less than a bare minimum for an office level device that could potentially be under constant use, especially when one considers the fact that this printer is fully network ready and therefore designed for sharing.

The unit’s print speed is also notably sluggish. With a maximum speed of 19 pages per minute for letter sized paper and 18 pages per minute for A4, the device is easily outperformed by a decent amount of its competitors in the same price range. Other complaints from customers include a flimsy keypad and a very difficult setup, which is actually a surprisingly common downside to HP printers.
