HP Color LaserJet CM1015mfp Review

Overview:

The HP Color LaserJet CM1015mfp is a rugged device capable of printing, copying, and scanning.  With mediocre print speeds, the compact device transforms a desk into an office.  It has a simple network interface and produces professional-quality documents.  Because of its mediocre speeds and low monthly-duty recommendations, the printer is ideal for a SoHo environment or small office.  The printer's dimensions of 17.25 inches in width, 20.0 inches in depth, 20.7 inches in height, and 48.5 pounds; it will fit upon most desktop-stands.

Pros:

The HP Color LaserJet CM1015mfp is a device that will print eight pages per minute in black or color.  Black and Color resolution rests at 600 x 600 dots per inch in resolution.  It has a standard memory of 96 Mega Bytes, upgradeable to 224 Mega Bytes for complex jobs.  Supported media types are Labels, Recycled paper, Plain paper, Envelopes, Transparencies, and Cards.  The maximum capacity of sheets the printer can hold is 500 sheets, whereas, the standard is 250 sheets.  The extended output tray in the front can hold up to 125 sheets.  Its network interface is a simple USB port.

The Color LaserJet CM1015mfp flatbed scanner scans black documents at a rate of 13 pages per minute and color documents at a rate of 4.4 pages per minute.  The scanner resolution is up to 1200 dots per inch in optical settings and 19,200 dots per inch in enhanced mode.

The copier component can produce eight copies per minute but can be set to create 99 copies.  Copy scaling can be utilized between 25-400%.  Minimum document-size allowable for the copier is 3 inches by 5 inches and maximum document-size allowable is 8.5 inches by 14 inches. 

Hewlett & Packard asserts a monthly duty cycle of 35,000 pages for the Color LaserJet CM1015mfp but recommends an average of between 500-1500 pages per month.  Paper handling is simplified with a one-sheet tray for multipurpose and a 250-sheet capable tray.  HP earned the ENERGY STAR label for the printer.  The printer is consistent with most modern operating systems like Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP versions, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Mac OS X versions 10.3-higher, Citrix MetaFrame, Linux, and Unix.  PPD (Postscript Printer Description, Postscript 3 emulation, and PCL 6 are the print languages for the printer. 

Cons:

HP states that some of the printer features may not work properly with Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating systems.  Though, design-looks are not everything, the printer does not look appealing and does not quite meet standard performance requirements.  It has limited network functionality and mediocre speeds.  The duplexing feature is, unfortunately, manual; which means there is significantly more user-intervention for two-sided prints.  If an end-user is expected to be printing a large-volume of booklet-like documents, he or she should take a pass on this printer.  Given the printer's size and generous paper capacity, HP should incorporate Ethernet connectivity.  The given USB port significantly reduces the network-ability of the printer.  While it is a low-volume printer, it could still be used for networked computers for lower-volume environments; if it had flexible network-ability.
