Product Manuals
How to Install a Toner Cartridge in the Canon imageCLASS MF8450C Laser Printer
The message PREPARE A NEW TONER CARTRIDGE, followed by a color (BLACK, CYAN, MAGENTA, or YELLOW), will appear in the Canon ImageCLASS MF8450C’s display screen when it detects that one or more of its current toner cartridges is beginning to run low. This early warning system gives users the time to order a new cartridge and receive it before the cartridge runs completely out of ink or becomes unusable.

When the cartridge reaches a point where it absolutely must be changed to continue operation, the message REPLACE THE TONER CARTRIDGE, followed by a cartridge color, will appear. If white streaks appear in prints or some areas of imagery look faded, the cartridge also may be at the end of its life and need to be changed even if no message appears.

Open the front cover of the unit and you will see the toner cartridges arranged from top to bottom in the order of Black, Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta.

NOTE: It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that at this point, before cartridge removal, users place a protective piece of disposable printer paper of the now exposed transfer belt as virtually any contact made with the belt, especially from a sharp cartridge edge, could damage the belt or shorten its life.

To remove a cartridge, choose the proper color and press in on the BLUE tabs on either side of the cartridge. Pull it free of the machine. Remove the correct color new cartridge from its bag and immediately place the old cartridge inside the bag as it could still have toner on it.

The area inside of this printer has exposed high volt contacts and electrical contacts so it is the best policy to simply not touch anything other than the blue tabs on the toner cartridge when it is being removed or installed. Rock the new cartridge forward and back several times to distribute the toner inside it. It should then be placed on a flat surface and held firmly while the user pulls out the protective tape by the tab found at one end. Pull the tape straight out of the machine slowly because if it does break, it will render the cartridge useless.

On the opposite side of the cartridge there is another tab that must be pulled to remove the packaging material. It can then be inserted into the printer, always being held by its blue handles.

Line up the toner cartridge to be installed with the correct slot inside the printer and make sure it fits correctly into the guides. Slide it all the way into the printer until it snaps into place. Remember to remove the protective piece of paper if one was used and then close the cover of the machine.
How to Safely Store Your Toner Cartridges
It is advised to keep at least one set of toner cartridges on hand so that there is no down time if one of them goes out unexpectedly, but it is important that they are stored properly. Always keep cartridges in a cool place out of any direct sunlight, even when they are in their packaging. Never remove a cartridge from its packaging before it is to be installed and try to store the cartridges as flat and level as possible, as they would be sitting in the machine.

Canon ImageCLASS MF8450C Review

Overview:

It’s hit or miss when it comes to the capabilities of Canon’s full color multifunctional unit, the Canon ImageCLASS MF8450C. On one hand, the device cranks out exceptionally high text quality and is equipped with some fancy gizmos, but its overly high purchase price and underperformance in some areas make it, overall, a questionable buy.

Pros:

Canon is sure to emphasize its TFT Thin Film Transistor display that is featured on the Canon ImageCLASS MF8450C which, at 3.5 inches, provides a nice, full color menu system with the help of dedicated buttons. Paired with the “easy scroll” wheel, this unit’s on board control setup may even be easier and faster to use than a touch screen.

This device does in fact feature Canon’s Pure Black technology that really does help to get those darks their darkest and help to make text clarity phenomenal. Ethernet is included with the device as well as a USB 2.0 port for single PC hosting. Those who purchase this unit in particular will definitely want to consider going with a network setup as this one device could add color print capabilities to an entire office.

The printer is truly a full duplex device meaning it can duplex scan as well as duplex copy, print, and fax. With this level of duplex, two sided versatility, a considerable amount of paper can be saved in the long run due to how easy it is to take advantage of the hardware.

The duplex scanning is made possibly by the built in Duplex Automatic Document feeder that can hold up to 50 sheets of input. This device can copy from a two sided source to two sided output in full color, with no additional user intervention. That, alone, makes the unit stand out among its peers. Faxes can take advantage of all this duplex hardware as well, and at the exceptional quality of 406 x 391 dots per inch.

Cons:

The unit’s color and print speeds are equal on this device and both top out at just about 17 pages per minute, making the device on the slower side of things, even for the usually lower performance color market. Really though, the printers main downfall is that it is downright expensive. Up front cost and cost to operate for this machine should make any buyer skeptical right off the bat.

With a copy resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch, the device is unfortunately not ideal for making fast copies of pictures and complex imagery. Its fully capable of printing in high quality mode (though not photo quality at 2400 x 600 dots per inch), but its scanner seems to have been left in the dust in this aspect. In fact, color scans can only be done at a louse 300 x 600 dots per inch. There are a few attractive scan features included, such as scanning to a USB device via a front USB port, but a buyer would have to ask himself what the point is at such low overall quality.
