5 Products for the Kyocera Mita FS-1016MFP Laser Printer
Kyocera FS-1016MFP Review
For the home or small office use, the 2006 Copystar/Kyocera FS-1016MFP offers the copying, scanning, and printing all in a single desktop package. Directly attaching to any computer with USB, the Copystar prints 600 x 600 dpi images at speeds up to 17 monochrome pages per minute.
Starting at 33 pounds with an 18.7” x 15.4” footprint, the FS-1016MFP multifunction can sit on a desk, but the 19” height may make this multi-function a little tall if there’s overhanging shelves. But sitting the Copystar on a table or credenza will give more than enough clearance to use its automatic document feeder. The control panel gives a person full control of copy and scanning features without the need to install special software on their computer. The panel consists of a LCD display, a 10-key pad for copies, and the traditional buttons and indicator LEDs for printing. After a 25 second warm-up, this former Kyocera multifunction starts printing at speeds up to 17 ppm. With a maximum resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, the FS-1016MFP is great for printing text and simple graphics. Photographs will have a more grainy quality, and if you are a stickler for details the FS-1016MFP’s resolution may not have the sharpness you desire. The copy function has three different exposure modes & resolutions up to 600 x 600 dpi to handle text to photo reproduction. The magnification can be automatically or manually changed from 25% to 400%, and up to 99 monochrome copies can be made. Originals can be scanned in color from resolutions ranging from 100 to 1200 dpi. Scans can be saved in the popular BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PDF, or sent directly back to the computer or e-mailed. This Copystar has a single sliding paper tray for holding up to 250 legal-size sheets. Non-standard sizes from 5½” x 8½” up to 8½” x 14” are manually fed into the single-sheet multi-purpose tray. The MFP uses an 8½” x 14” platen to support scanning up to legal size single documents and books. The adjustable automatic document feeder allows for single-sided scanning up to 50 originals at 14 pages per minute. USB 2.0 connections allow for direct computer connection. With the 32MB fixed memory the printer could handle additional workloads if shared across a small classroom or department.
In spite of the fact that most businesses will accept correspondence by e-mail, for various reasons certain institutions (mostly the financial ones) still require forms and contacts to be faxed instead of just accepting an e-mail with the scanned document attached. If Copystar added a facsimile mode, this would be the perfect all-in-one machine for any office or home business. The print and scanning speeds of the FS-1016MFP are slow, even for the small workgroup market it’s targeted for. Having laser print speeds at 17 ppm and each job taking 11 additional seconds to start, many inkjet printers are faster than this model. The FS-1016MFP does not have PCL or PostScript print emulators, relying on drivers used by the computer. For most printing, these emulators will not be missed, but graphic designers using Adobe software will see some differences. |
