Kyocera Mita FS-1370DN Review

In the advent of fast low-cost printers, Kyocera Mita took a step up with its economical and ecological FS-1370DN mono laser printer. With the resemblance of Kyocera Mita printers like FS-1120D, FS-1370DN stands out at the crowd with it claiming and boasting for extremely faster speed, low total cost of ownership and being relatively cheap behind its increased expandability. A printer excellent for odd printing jobs that is of great reliability without compromising the buying capacity of consumers.

The amazing fast engine system makes FS-1370DN handle actions at a shockingly speedy rate. Neither the warm-up time from main power on nor the warm-up time from sleep mode is slow. FS-1370DN’s warm-up time takes only 20 seconds or less from main power on and only 15 seconds or less from sleep mode. Very prominent with its first print out time to be only 7 seconds or less and a per minute printing speed of 37 PPM ( pages per minute) for letter size, 30 PPM for legal size and 35 PPM for A4 size. It has a considerably large standard memory at 128 MB that is upgradable to 1152 MB via 144 pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM slot which should be more than sufficient.

Kyocera Mita FS-1370DN’s usability and looks are better enhanced to heighten distinctiveness. The printer’s case is revamped in cream color with a dark gray slate color employed with some highlights and coupled with some simple smart lines to enhance individuality. One interesting highlight is a thin ring of menu controls with an OK button at the center plus an orange and green circular button for start and stop functions just slightly below this ring of menu controls. A few centimeters away to the top of this ring of menu controls is a slanted 2-line 16-character LCD display mounted at the top of the ridge which is accompanied by LED lights indicating Ready, Data and Attention. The position and orientation of this LCD display and LED lights makes it easier for it to be viewable at a distant. Printing is as well made easy with the convenient high speed USB 2.0 Host Interface at the top of the right side panel of the printer near where the ring of menu controls and LCD display is located which permits printing of files directly from a memory stick. Another highlight is a notable triangular folding paper stop at the top of the machine frame. These interesting features are mounted all in FS-1370DN with dimensions 14.8”W x 15.5”D x 10.5”H and weight of 26.5 lbs. which makes it not that bulky and mobility is particularly not a hassle.

Print quality is notable perhaps due to its true printer resolution of 1200 x 1200 DPI which may be adjusted into three more options: the fast 1200 mode (1800 x 600 DPI) , 600 x 600 DPI and 300 x 300 DPI. Text prints are heavy and deep and the maximum duty cycle is pretty impressive which prints up to 50,000 pages per month. With such low-cost speedy printer, the printing noise of 55 dB (A) and idling noise of 30 dB (A) is considerably a quiet type printer available in the market.

The saving capacity is as well maximized because of its long lasting drum unit and long life refillable toner cartridge plus the sleep mode function saves a lot of electricity consumption. Compatibility is not a concern as FS-1370DN as it has drivers for a number of different platforms (e.g. Windows, OS x and Linux) and is compatible with the recent operating systems.

Along with its amplified expandability, paper sheet capacity can be maximized for up to 800 sheet paper capacity with the two additional paper feeders. The standard 250 paper sheet drawer and a 50 sheet Multipurpose tray can handle papers of various sizes such as letter, legal, A4, A5, A6, Officio2, B5, B6, Folio, Statement and Executive and of various types such as Bond, Postcards, Envelopes, Labels, Transparencies and other specialty papers.

While Kyocera Mita FS-1370DN is excellent in text prints, its printouts from photographs and some graphics produces slight horizontal banding with seemingly high-contrast regions that somehow reduces the detail. The amazing printing speed is considerably slowed down when printing some complex graphics and that this printer can merely be really reliable and helpful for generally rush bulk text print needs but not with rush graphic and photo prints. Printing with specialty papers is also not straightforward as the paper size must be set first before prompting it to print.
