Lanier LD-435C Review

Overview:

With 35 pages per minute of full color print speed, the Lanier LD-435C stands as one of the fastest color laser printers available. This heavy duty machine is also fully expandable with a line of finishers, security options, and even a fax modem, making the device easily customizable to suit any color document handling need perfectly.

Pros:

The Lanier LD-435C’s real strong point is its overall print speed as opposed to its print quality. While the device is far from a high resolution printer, it certainly cannot be called slow thanks to its 35 page per minute color print speed. Black and white printing can be done at an equal speed and if even more performance is needed, users can turn to Lanier’s even faster version of the device; the Lanier LD-445C which prints at a speed of 40 pages per minute for color and 45 ppm in black and white.

As a copy machine, the Lanier LD-435C is equally as fast. Its first copy out time when dealing in full color single sided printing is only 8 seconds and monochrome copies offer a first copy out time of just under five seconds. When dealing with double sided printing and copying, first page out times will vary.

An automatic reversing document feeder sits atop the Lanier LD-435C multifunctional device and, when paired with the unit’s built in duplex print capabilities, results in fully automated two sided paper handling. This means that double sided, full color input can be placed into the machine and double sided color output can be reproduced with no additional user interaction.

Fax capabilities are not standard for the Lanier LD-435C, but a fax modem card is available and makes the unit into a fully functional color fax machine. If the optional SAF memory is installed in the unit as well, faxes can be sent and received in full color at the very relatively high fax resolution of 400 x 400 dots per inch. The unit’s 33.6 kbps Super G3 fax modem delivers a transmission speed of about 2 seconds per page w/JBIG and 3 seconds per page w/MMR.

The Lanier LD-435C also provides a notable amount of phone number storage. Up to 2,000 quick dials can be stored in the device, which is ten times the number storage of lower end units. 100 group dials with up to 500 locations each can also be stored, as well as incoming fax page data. 4 MBs of memory is the standard amount included with the fax hardware, but this can be upgraded up to 28 MBs.

Cons:

For such an expensive machine, the Lanier LD-435C’s maximum print resolution is more or less unacceptable. The device is adjustable all the way up to a pathetic 600 x600 dot per inch quality which would be fine if the device was a black and white document printer, but this is a full color laser device we’re dealing with, and a minimalistic print resolution such as 600 dpi severely limits what the device is capable of.
