Lexmark X654DE Review

Overview:

The enormous 9 inch color touch screen located on the front of the Lexmark X654DE is certainly eye catching, but this powerful hardware set is more than just nice to look at. This heavy duty yet reasonably sized machine is capable of outperforming most of its competition when it comes to maximum print and copy speeds, and is fully expandable to suit a wide variety of office needs.

Pros:

With a 55 page per minute print speed, the Lexmark X654DE is easily one of the fastest printers available. It competes with full sized copy machines in the majority of its other specifications as well, yet can cost thousands less. The unit is not as equipped to handle super extreme monthly duty cycles, but it can handle a maximum of 275,000 impressions per month, making it easily sturdy enough to handle a small office’s work load without incident. If problems do arise with the hardware, Lexmark’s one year limited warranty will protect buyers, though purchasing a longer term protection plan is advised.

The Lexmark X654DE is actually equipped with a seemingly limited amount of memory. It has only 256 MBs included in box, though this can be upgraded all the way up to a total of 1280 MBs for better handling of complex print material. Whether the memory is upgraded or not, basic document printing should consistently come close to the advertised print speed.

Thankfully, the Lexmark X654DE is capable of printing at resolutions of up to 1200 x 1200 dots per inch and thus can print far superior text quality than 600 x 600 dot per inch copy machines, not to mention much better imagery.

Along with print, copy, and scan abilities, the Lexmark X654DE is also equipped with a Super G3 fax modem with a transmission speed of 33.6 Kbps, and with the help of the 9 inch touch screen, sending and receiving faxes really almost couldn’t be easier.

Cons:

The Lexmark X654DE is quite fully loaded, but its price tag certainly does reflect that. The real danger in purchasing this heavy duty piece of hardware is in overspending on a device that is just too much printer for a lot of small offices when a smaller, much, much less expensive unit would suffice. If you would willing to consider printing and copying at about half the speed of this device, units that are literally 90% cheaper are available that may suit your needs better.

The scan element of the Lexmark X654DE can only pull off an optical scan resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch. This means that copied material will not be able to be reproduced at the printer’s 1200 dot per inch quality, and will therefore be noticeably inferior.

Another valid gripe that one could argue about the Lexmark X654DE is that its first print out time clocks in at 9.5 seconds. Printers that cost literally thousands of dollars less can pull of first page out times of 5 or 6 seconds, which means that, when printing single page material, these inexpensive units will actually far outperform the Lexmark X654DE.
