Overview:

The OkiData C5200n is a desktop color laser printer with a large paper capacity, making it potentially suitable for a small office or a smaller workgroup environment. However, when compared to many higher-end workgroup printers, it comes across as feature limited and considerably slower, both of which are worth taking into account when choosing a model like this one for your workplace. 

Pros:

The OkiData C5200n measures 16.7" by 22.1" by 13.6" and weighs approximately 57.3 lbs, essentially in line with most other desktop color laser printers (which weigh more than black and white desktop lasers due to the added toner cartridges and drum units required in order to print color). Given its size, it will likely fit comfortably on a desktop or tabletop alongside other equipment, but could also be placed on a dedicated piece of furniture if desired.

The printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 16 pages per minute in color or 24 pages per minute in black and white with a time to first page of 13 seconds in color and 9 seconds in black and white. The C5200n produces documents at a maximum speed of 1200 by 600 dpi and has a duty cycle of up to 50000 pages per month.

The C5200n includes a 300-sheet paper tray capable of printing to legal, letter, and universal paper. A 100-sheet multi-purpose tray is also included, and a 530-sheet paper tray can be added to bring the printer's total capacity up to 930 sheets. The multi-purpose tray can print to overhead transparencies, envelopes, mailing label stock, and banners as large as 8.5" by 47.24"; the main tray prints to paper weighing between 20 and 32 lb bond, while the optional tray prints to paper weighing between 20 and 47 lb pond. The manual feed can support paper weighing between 20 and 110 lb bond, and the optional duplex unit can process paper weighed out at 20-28 lb bond.

The C5200n interfaces with systems via either a built-in USB 2.0 port or a standard 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port, which connects to the printer's dedicated internal print server for easy networking and workgroup use.

Duplexing is available via an optional automatic duplexing unit.

The C5200n's ships with 32 MB of memory, which can be expanded to 288 MB of RAM if desired, which will speed up intensive, detail-heavy print jobs and image processing (which can slow printing to a crawl under certain circumstances).

The C5200n includes a substantive set of hardware controls on the printer's front panel for easy administration and settings changes when and where necessary, something not necessarily offered by many desktop printers (which do away with LEDs and buttons in favor of compact formfactor and software-based administration).

Cons:

Many workgroup printers offer faster print speeds than the C5200n, as do a number of newer desktop laser printers. While 24 pages per minute is above standard, there are a number of devices now offering speeds of 40-60 pages per minute, and users in environments with heavier paper throughputs will likely want to consider one of those models instead.

The C5200n includes no resident fonts, unlike the higher-end C5400n, which includes considerable PCL, PostScript, and Line Printer emulation. As a consequence, documents will look considerably better and be supported by many more platforms on the C5400 than the C5200, which only offers official support for printing from Windows and Mac OS X (v10.1 and higher).

The C5200n lacks support for file storage on an included hard drive, though a 20GB drive is available as an add-on if you purchase the higher-end C5400n instead.
