Okidata C7300dxn Review
Okidata's C7300dxn is a discontinued color laser printer capable of producing documents at still-standard speeds and with largely comparable features to newer models, though there are a number of places in which the printer shows its age, potentially making it a less attractive purchase than something newer.
The printer measures 16.9" by 16.9" by 24.4" and weighs 105 lbs, making it small enough to fit on a desk but likely to heavy to sit alongside other equipment unless the furniture is rated for such a heavy load. Specialized furniture to hold this printer is available, but a credenza or a table intended for it will likely suit the printer fine. The printer produces documents at a speed of 24 pages per minute in black and 20 pages per minute in color with a first page out of 10 seconds in black and 12 seconds in color. Its maximum document resolution is 1200 by 600 dpi.
The printer has a standard input capacity of 630 sheets across a 530 sheet universal tray and a 100 sheet multipurpose tray, though it can be expanded to 1690 sheets by adding more 530-sheet paper trays (one of which must replace the universal tray).
The printer supports overhead transparencies and mailing label stock as well as normal paper. It supports documents as large as 8.5" by 47.24" and supports paper weighted between 20lb and 47lb bond, though its manual feed can process paper as heavy as 110 lb if needed.
The printer supports emulation of the PCL 5c and Adobe PostScript 3 printing languages. It also supports direct PDF printing when running Windows and a hard drive is installed in the printer. It has support for 136 PostScript fonts, 80 PCL fonts, and bitmap support for Line printing, OCR-A, OCR-B, and USPS Zip if needed.
The printer includes 128 MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 1024 MB if desired in 64, 128, 256, or 512 MB DIMMs.
The printer includes an IEEE-1284 bi-directional parallel port, a USB 1.1 port, and a 10/100 Base T Ethernet port for network connectivity.
The printer includes a 10 GB hard drive for document storage and to improve overall performance speed.
Duplex printing is included standard in this model.
The printer includes a Job Accounting Utility, as well as web-based management PrintSuperVision software and an embedded network server built into the network card.
The printer does not include a USB 2.0 port, only USB 1.1, potentially producing slowdown unexpected of commercial printers given that most models now available all include support for USB 2.0 and thus have a significantly faster data transfer rate. Operating systems as listed in the printer's documentation (and thus available on the drivers disc, most likely) are only Mac OS 8.6 through 9.2.1, Mac OS X 10.1, Windows 95 through Windows XP, and several flavors of Linux, though newer drivers to ensure this printer's compatibility are likely available online without a huge amount of inconvenience. Environments with newer systems not networked, however, may find this to be frustrating.
The printer does not support a large number of paper types, making it potentially inconvenient for environments that do a lot of multipurpose document work.
The printer's built in 10 GB hard drive is small by today's standards and adds another potential point of failure to consider when purchasing an older printer for a modern office environment.
A handful of software options available with this printer may be incompatible with newer operating systems, requiring updates or different solutions.
The printer cannot be expanded to handle copying, fax, or scanning functions.
