When do I Replace a Drum Unit in the OkiData OkiFax 5980 Laser Fax Machine?

The lifespan of the installed drum unit depends mainly on the number of pages per print job, the media/paper type, and the environmental factors. For example, a new drum unit lasts approx. 20,000 pages for continuous printing (5+ pages per print job) and only 9,000 pages at 1 page per job. One of the listed messages and print quality problems will appear when the installed drum unit reaches the end of its useful life. Please replace the installed drum unit with a new one when/if any of the listed indications appears.

How to Install a Drum Unit in the OkiData OkiFax 5980 Laser Fax Machine

In the first step of the replacement procedure, you must switch the OkiData OkiFax 5980 Laser Fax Machine off, and then open the document tray completely. After that, you must unlock the copy stacker by pressing the two release buttons, and then lift the stacker up. Now, you must remove the exhausted drum unit along with the installed toner cartridge from the laser fax machine, and then unpack the replacement component. Please note that you have to install a new toner cartridge when replacing the drum unit. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must insert the new drum unit into the machine, and then remove the cover from the toner well. Once the toner well cover is removed, you must install a new toner cartridge into the new drum unit, and then close the copy stacker and the document tray. Finally, you must switch the OkiData OkiFax 5980 Laser Fax Machine on, and then reset the drum counter by pressing [Menu/Exit] – [v] – [Enter] – [Enter] – [Clear] – [Clear].
