Brother MFC-J415W Review

Overview:

The Brother MFC-J415W printer is one of the best home office printers because it does not weigh a lot and is an all-in-one printer as it can scan, copy, print, and fax. This printer is unique because it has two trays (one for photos and one for paper) inbuilt into it, which keeps the machine from jamming. The MFC-J415W printer has USB 2.0 and wireless networking, so that the printer can be used anywhere within the home or office building and does not need to be plugged in to a computer to print. The printer is compatible with Windows and Mac OS programs, and the printer also has mobile phone capabilities and the phone can be used to print from anywhere.

Pros:

A feature that the Brother MFC-J415W printer has that is convenient to use is wireless networking, which it also uses a USB2 for connection, so either one can be used to connect the printer. The wireless networking provides possibilities that a simple USB2 connection does not, and one of these is access to a specially made app for the printer called iPrint&scan. Which allows printing or scanning of any JPEG file, PDF file, or web page straight from your mobile phone (such as Apple, Android, or Windows Phone 7), but, on the Windows Phone 7, it does not have scanning and can only print JPEG files.

The MCF-J415W printer has two trays where paper and photos are ejected, and one of them (the one on top) is for paper and documents while the smaller one (the one in the front) is used for smaller things such as photos or cards. The larger paper tray holds a maximum output capacity of 50 sheets of paper, and the tray can be adjusted to fit various sizes of papers (the minimum is 3.9” Width and 5.8” Length, and the maximum is 8.5” Width and 14” Length). The amount of weight that the paper tray is limited because the printer is smaller than other, and the tray can only hold anywhere from 17 to 58 pounds of paper.

Another unique feature of the printer is the ink cartridges, which are easy to replace and there can be four different types of ink in the four compartments of the ink cartridge. The maximum print resolution for the Brother MCF-J415W is 6000 to 1200 dpi, and the maximum speed for color and black is 35 ppm (black) and 28 ppm (color).

Cons:

Sometimes with the Brother MCF-J415W printer the paper will jam, and even after clearing the jam the message on the machine will continue to say that it is jammed. This can take away from the printing time because if the message that the paper is jammed stays on the screen, the printing will be put on hold until it is fixed.

The initial setup for this printer can be difficult at first because the wireless connection may take some time before it starts to function properly. When most technology connects to wireless networking for the first time, there are some problems at first until the connection is good. Also, the manual used for the printer does not give as clear instructions on how to set it up, and so putting the printer together can be difficult.

Other problems that occur with the Brother MCF-J415W printer is that the input and output paper capacity for the machine is smaller than most printers, and the maximum amount of pages for the input capacity is 100 (although only 50 is recommended). The amount of output paper capacity the printer has is 2,500 (which this is the monthly output capacity), but it is recommended that only 50 to 1,000 pages are printed each month. Next, when printing high quality photos the printer takes its time to create the picture, and it is not built to give fast high quality photos (so it is either high quality photos with a slow printing time, or a fast printing time but low quality photos).
