HP 5000gn/5000n Review
The HP Laserjet 5000 series is composed of five different model variations of a versatile monochrome laser printer that was designed to offer users complete control over their hardware through customization. Each model varies in their included memory specifications, paper storage capacity, and networking abilities.
Though this older model falls far behind the printers on the market today in most areas due to its age, it does offer users a very comprehensive selection of model variations that should be enough to keep light duty users happy. Of the five different models in the 5000 series, the base model is the most limited. It offers no supplemental hardware and only 4 MBs of included memory. It can, however, print to oversized 11 x 17 inch paper which is great for ledger and tabloid sized output.
Next in line is the HP LaserJet 5000n, a network ready version of the model. The 5000n not only includes an Ethernet port for connecting the entire small office, but also comes with an additional 4 MBs of internal memory for a total of 8 MBs and a third paper tray. The models that include the third paper tray have a grand total of 850 sheets worth of storage space which is composed of a 100 sheet multi purpose tray, and 250 sheet standard paper tray, and the additional 500 sheet tray. Certain models, such as the base model, do not include the 500 sheet tray, but it can be purchased separately.
The HP LaserJet 5000gn boosts the internal memory up to 12 MBs and also comes complete with a Jetdirect print server card, as well as an internal hard disk drive for document serving and permanent storage of frequently used data, while the slightly different HP LaserJet 5000dn model does not include the hard drive, but instead includes a full 32 MBs of RAM memory.
Lastly, HP offers the LaserJet 5000 LE model which carries the same features as the base model, but does not include the 250 sheet paper tray or the 500 sheet tray.
This dated printer series falls severely behind more current units in the area of overall print speed and performance. With a maximum print speed of only 16 pages per minute for all five model variations, the HP LaserJet 5000gn/5000n printers do not operate at an acceptable, business class level, and high volume printing projects will take about twice as long to complete as they would with a more current printing device.
Laser printers are intended for both speed and high volume printing, and the HP LaserJet 5000gn/5000n fails in both areas.
