Product Manuals
When do I Replace a Drum Unit in the Sharp AL-1642CS Digital Laser Copier?
Your Sharp AL-1642CS is equipped with a built-in drum unit monitoring system, which will warn you, when a new drum unit is needed. The ``Drum unit replacement required`` symbol will light up, when the drum unit is close to the end of its lifecycle. When the resource of the drum unit is completely consumed, the symbol will start blinking and all printing operations will be blocked. Herein, you must replace the exhausted drum unit with a new one.
How to replace a Drum Unit in the Sharp AL-1642CS Digital Laser Copier
The AL-1642CS` drum unit replacement procedure requires the complete disassembly of the toner cartridge. Initially, you must open the multi-bypass tray by slightly pulling it towards you, and then open the side and front covers. After that, you must press the release button of the toner cartridge and slowly pull it out of the Sharp AL-1642CS Digital Laser Copier. Now, you must grab the exhausted/old drum unit by its handle and slowly pull it out. Once the old drum unit is out, you can unpack the new one and remove its protective cover. Then, you must slowly push it into the copier and return the toner cartridge to its original place. Finally, you can close the front cover, and after that the side cover by pressing it by the projections near the locking button. Once the new drum unit is installed, the ``Drum unit replacement required`` indicator will go out and the ``Start`` LED will light up.

Sharp AL-1642CS Review

The Sharp AL-1642CS offers twice the paper storage capacity of other units in the Sharp AL-1600 series. It is fitted with a built in duplexer, an extra paper tray, and a thorough feature set that make it a perfect personal 3 in 1 device for an individual user.

The platen glass found under the Sharp AL-1642CS’s flip top lid is of full Legal size, making 8.5 x 11 inch copies, and anything smaller, possible. For copying and scanning multiple pages at one time, users can take advantage of the unit’s 30 page automatic document feeder that sits atop the device.

8 MBs of on board memory makes digital copying possible and allows a scan once, print many function to be activated, allowing users to print up to 99 continuous copies from a single source. The three various exposure modes selectable when making copies are auto, manual, and photo. When using photo mode, the resolution is automatically bumped up to 600 x 600 dots per inch (the hardware’s maximum), while automatic exposure uses a lower 600 x 300 dot per inch setting.

Interestingly, the Sharp AL-1642CS is a fully equipped duplexing model, meaning it can print to both sides of a piece of output completely automatically. Duplex printing can be a lifesaver when it comes to reducing rampant paper costs, though, unfortunately, the unit’s automatic document feeder can only scan single sides of input material.

The Sharp AL-1642CS is a little on the hefty side with a weight of 51 pounds and a footprint that measures 20.4 inches x 19.4 inches. While it will certainly fit on a decent sized desk, it could pose a problem for those working in a confided or limited space.

The device is not without its limitations and, like many Sharp multifunctional units from this ere, the Sharp AL-1642CS does not come with PCL or PostScrip emulation. Many sharp products use their own GDI print emulation and this printer is no exception. In many cases, the GDI emulation is just as fast, but under certain conditions it will perform significantly worse than PCL would.

The unit shows signs of its age in a number of different ways, but possibly none of them are as blatant as its connectivity options. No network card is included in the hardware, leaving only a Parallel port and a USB 1.1 port for connecting to a host PC. Without a high speed USB connection, all PC related functions, especially scanning, will lag considerably if compared to a high speed USB 2.0 or higher setup.

Overall, the Sharp AL-1642CS’s print and copy speeds are, more or less, unacceptable by today’s standards. One could possibly argue that 16 copies per minute is within an acceptable range for a desktop copy machine, but the device’s 12 page per minute print speed at its lowest quality setting is an insult. Users who require any degree of speed performance in their hardware should discard this printer as an option from the start, regardless of what bargains are available online.
