Epson Stylus C62 Review

Epson's Stylus C62, a consumer inkjet printer introduced in 2002 and since discontinued, offers a fairly simple printing system but cannot be easily recommended. Newer consumer inkjet printers offer much more sophisticated printing and connectivity options, as well as overall superior designs, making this only an attractive choice if found for an extremely low price (and even then, approach with caution).

The Stylus C62 measures 18.8" by 19" by 7.1" and weighs 7.5 lbs with its ink cartridges, making it easily transported in most situations and by most users. It can sit comfortably alongside other computer equipment in a home or home office environment, or on its own table or desk if desired.

The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 5760 by 720 optimized dpi, consistent with most inkjet printers. It has a minimum ink droplet size of 4 picoliters, smaller than earlier models like it. The printer's monochrome head features 144 nozzles and each color head has 48 nozzles for ink transfers, considerably more than other inkjet printers made around this period in printer manufacturing.
The printer is rated to produce pages at speeds of approximately 14 pages per minute in black and 10 pages per minute in color, as well as 4" by 6" prints within 1 minute, 24 seconds and an 8" by 10" photo in approximately 3 minutes, 7 seconds, largely consistent with other inkjets like this one.
The printer has a maximum printable area of between 8.26" by 10.76" and a maximum paper width on a single sheet of 9.5". It supports letter, legal, executive, and user defined paper sizes between 3.5" by 3.5" and 8.5" by 44", as well as borderless photos at 4" by 6".
The printer supports printing to plain paper, bond paper, Epson glossy photo paper, Epson premium bright white paper, Epson matte paper heavyweight, Epson double-sided matte paper, Epson photo quality ink jet paper and cards, Epson photo quality glossy film, Epson self-adhesive sheets, Epson glossy photo stickers, Epson iron-on transfer paper, Epson inkjet transparencies, and banner paper. It also supports standard-sized envelopes on plain, bond and air mail paper.
The printer's paper input capacity is 100 sheets and 10 envelopes, consistent with almost every other inkjet model like this one.
The printer supports connections to systems using either IEEE-1284 Parallel or USB ports, making it easy to interface this printer with either legacy or newer systems.

Like many other Epson printers manufactured in the early 2000s, this model suffers from print head clogs that render documents unreadable and impossible. Clogged print heads need to be cleaned (they are not user-replaceable) and the cleaning process doesn't necessarily yield improved prints.

Unlike newer Epson inkjets, the printer only supports a 4-color CMYK print cartridge system. Newer photo capable inkjet printers feature at least two black ink cartridges as well as photo and matte color cartridges, which allow for users to replace only the exhausted ink cartridges rather than an entire color cartridge every time a single color has been drained.
Unlike newer consumer inkjets, this printer lacks many conveniences such as integrated scanning and copying, as well as built-in networking, 802.11x-based wireless or Bluetooth support, LCD screens, memory card readers, or PictBridge support to enable direct printing from digital cameras.
Like many Epson printers, the printer will refuse to print black documents when out of color ink and vice-versa. As a consequence, it's easy to lose time unless well-stocked in advance with ink cartridges.
