Replacing the Ink Cartridge in an Epson Stylus Photo 1280
The maintenance light as well as the power light will flash when one or more of the Epson Stylus Photo 1280’s ink cartridges has run low. At this point, it is time to order new ink cartridges as one of the current ones is about to run completely out of ink thus ceasing operation of the printer.

When both the maintenance light and the power light stay on, one of the cartridges has run completely out and must be replaced before printing can continue. Sometimes cartridges will need replacement even if they are not entirely empty. This can happen if a cartridge is more than six months old and will not always result in a blink error from the printer but instead will be evident in unsatisfactory print quality.

You can attempt to run a print head alignment to fix problems caused by old cartridges but if this is not effective, they must be replaced. When swapping out cartridges, the printer must be turned on but not currently in use.

Open the cover of the printer and press the YELLOW ink cartridge button. This will cause the print head and cartridges to move to the left so that the cartridges are accessible. Both of the cartridges have their own separate cartridge cover which must be lifted open to remove the cartridge. Once removed, dispose of the old cartridge immediately to prevent ink blotting.

New cartridges, when opened, must have the YELLOW sealing tape on them removed but NOT THE BLUE TAPE, as removing this seal will cause the cartridge to leak. In order to fit the new cartridge into its position in the cartridge holder, it will have to be tilted slightly towards the user so that the tabs on the back of the cartridge hooks into the cartridge clamp. When inserted properly, the cartridge should sit level so that its cover can be closed.

Close the clamp down and if you need to replace the other cartridge as well, do so now. When finished with the cartridge replacement, press the cartridge replacement button before closing the printer cover. The cartridges will move back to their ready position and you will have to wait a few moments for the cartridges to be charged before printing can commence.
Running a Printer Check Test on the Epson Stylus Photo 1280
To test the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 for printing problems, begin with the printer and its current host PC turned off. Also, completely disconnect any connections to a PC and make sure that paper of at least letter size is loaded into the device (larger is ok). Hold down the maintenance button WHILE YOU PRESS THE POWER BUTTON and continue to hold it down.

The power light will start to flash and at that point it is safe to release the maintenance button. The printer will then, on its own, print a test page with a nozzle check pattern on it. An ink counter and ROM version number will also be seen on the page but users should really be looking at the pattern for gaps, which would indicate that the print head itself requires cleaning or that a cartridge needs replacement.

Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Review

Overview:

The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 is the most advanced in Epson's Stylus Photo 12 Series, with its improved capacity in handling paper, increased number of features and enhanced quality in Epson's trademark of producing excellent photo and image print production. With its compact frame and intuitive design, the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 is perfect for either personal and professional use.

Pros:

The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 features varied print speeds depending on the print output it is handling. It has a normal draft text mode that clocks at a speed of 8 pages per minute, while for printing colored photos in photo mode, the speed is at approximately 7.5 minutes in a high-quality resolution of 1,440 dots per inch. Maximum photo quality setting on the other hand brings the speed to 18 minutes for a letter-size photo. For a 4 x 6 inch photo, the speed is around 54 seconds, and less than 2 minutes for photos measuring 8 x 10 inches. The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 continues to employ the 6-color Micro Piezo ink jet technology to maintain high quality detail on color, tone and highlights on every photo print output it provides. It also uses a 4-picoliter variable sized ink droplet technology for increased color and tone accuracy.

The resolutions featured in the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 starts from 120 x 120 dpi up to a maximum of 2,880 x 720 dpi. Resolutions in between are 360 x 360 dpi, 720 x 720 dpi, 360 x 720 dpi and 1,440 x 720 dpi. With all these varied resolution settings, the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 offers the True BorderFree printing technology, allowing prints for 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10 inch letter paper types, and 11 x 14 enlargements and 13 x 44 inch panoramas that widens its coverage for available printing sizes without the inconvenience that other non-BorderFree printers can give. The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 also has capability to produce fast-drying and water-resistant prints on Epson Premium Glossy photo papers and Matte paper types, which is a welcome feature for users that prefer quick results even in high quality color outputs.

The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 includes a standard interface of an IEEE 1284 parallel and USB ports, with Epson ESC/P Raster and Epson remote for its printer language support. For supported drivers that entail compatibility with operating system environments, the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 has Windows parallel, USB and Macintosh USB for Windows and MAC OS. Software support on the other hand include Adobe Photoshop, Epson Software Film Factory and QBeo PhotoGenetics.

Paper handling with the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 has improved over earlier models such as the Epson Stylus Photo 1200 and Epson Stylus Photo 1270. Input paper capacity is still at approximately 100 sheets, 10 envelopes or 30 transparencies. Output paper capacity now stands at 50 sheets from the 30 sheet capacity the two earlier models offer.

For its design, the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 is similar with the Epson Stylus Photo 1200 and 1270, with its signature trapezoid shape that has a black and white color combination on its body frame. Its dimensions measure at 24 x 12.2 x 6.9 inches with a given weight of 18.48 lbs. This maintains Epson's signature compact design and easily mobile characteristic, which appeals to both home and small office users.

Cons:

The Epson Stylus Photo 1280 does not have a lot features that do not appeal to users of every kind, from home to business users. As with earlier Epson color printers, speed is an issue, as it is comparatively slow compared to other color printers in the market.
