LEXMARK X342N DRUM

The drum unit (also called photoconductor unit) is a consumable, user-replaceable component, which forms the toner image. A new drum unit lasts up to 30,000 pages at 5% coverage. You will see/notice one or more of the listed indications and print quality problems when the installed drum unit reaches the end of its useful life. Please follow the instructions given after each of the listed indications.

Vertical lines, solid black printouts, and/or vertical repetitive defects – The surface of the photoconductive drum is very sensitive to light, moisture (condensation), touch, and magnetic fields. The listed print quality problems indicate that the surface of the drum has been damaged. Thus, you have to install a new drum unit in your Lexmark X342n Printer if any of the listed problems occurs.

The following status message [84 Photoconductor Near Life] is displayed on the LCD screen – The Lexmark X342n Printer is programmed to monitor the technical condition of all installed consumables. The machine will display the listed message when it detects that the installed drum unit has reached near the end of its useful life. The purpose of this message is to give the user enough time for a purchase of a new drum unit, in order to be avoided adverse printing delays and print quality problems. Therefore, you should install a new drum unit soon after the initial appearance of the described status message.

The following service message [84 Replace Photoconductor] is displayed on the LCD screen – This service message indicates a hard stop, which means that your Lexmark X342n Printer is in a non-operational mode caused by a completely exhausted consumable component. You must install a new drum unit when the listed service message appears; otherwise, printing/copying will not resume.

The toner cartridge and the drum unit are assembled and installed into the main print compartment of your Lexmark X342n Printer. Therefore, you must start the replacement procedure by opening the front cover of the laser printer. Then, you must remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly by pulling the handle of the toner cartridge straight towards you, but please do not press the release button of the toner cartridge yet. After that, you must release the toner cartridge (only if the toner cartridge is still useable) from the exhausted drum unit by pressing the button on the front side of the assembly, and then pull the cartridge out of the exhausted component. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must carefully unpack the new drum unit, and then insert the toner cartridge into the new component, making sure that it snaps into place. Once the two components are securely assembled, you must insert them into the main print compartment, and then reset the drum counter by pressing and holding down the [Stop] button for about three seconds. To finish the replacement procedure, you must close the front cover, and then test your Lexmark X342n Printer.
