Brother MFC-5890CN Review
It’s a mixed bag when it comes to the Brother MFC-5890CN. With so many features crammed into a single, fairly inexpensive unit, it makes one wonder if Brother is cutting corners somewhere. Their factory specifications boast amazing performance specifications, but there are many drawbacks to this cheap hardware.
The device’s published print speeds of 35 pages per minute for black and white printing and 28 pages per minute seem almost too good to be true and this, seemingly, is the case. Real world performance tests have revealed these figures to be inflated, but print speeds to maintain a high even ranking to be considered positive. Print quality is also rated extremely high at 6000 x 1200 dots per inch, which is it capable of achieving when dealing with glossy photo paper. Standard document and imagery printing, however, will suffer greatly when it comes to overall quality. While the Brother MFC-5890CN is excessively large, it is fully capable of printing to ledger sized paper (11” x 17”), making it a valuable tool for those interested in oversized printing, especially when heavily detailed full color imagery is required, though full page prints will most certainly use up a considerable percentage of the small ink cartridges’ capacities.
The Brother MFC-5890CN is quite large; not to mention oddly shaped. The device appears slightly behind the times with its design, even with its very impressive 3.3 inch full color LCD screen. Another major design flaw that is becoming more and more apparent in many multifunctional units on the market is a recessed paper output tray. With a tray that sits flush with the device’s shell, users literally have to reach into the unit to retrieve page output, which is both tedious and unnecessary. Another mind boggling design flaw is found in the unit’s connectivity setup. The device offers both USB and Ethernet capabilities, yet the ports for both sit literally inside the machine; forcing users to open the unit to plug in a network or host PC and guide the cords through small holes in the outer shell of the unit. This function, though possibly valuable for those opting for a permanent setup, seems ultimately unnecessary. The device’s maximum monthly duty cycle of only 4,000 pages is also quite disappointing, and Brother recommends even less usage for maximum product life. Only 500 to 2500 pages per month should be printed, copied, or faxed for optimal product efficiency, restricting the unit’s usefulness as a high volume document printer. |
