Lexmark X4850 Review

Overview:

The only thing that really separates the Lexmark X4850 from its competition is its built in wireless capabilities. This 2007 color inkjet 3 in 1 unit is well past its prime, but is still capable of competently handling a small variety of basic color and monochrome document handling tasks.

Pros:

With print speeds of 30 pages per minute in black and white and 27 pages per minute in color, the Lexmark X4850 has withstood the test of time surprisingly well in the area of raw performance. Extremely similar to the Lexmark X6570 model in appearance, this 3 in 1 unit separates itself from other devices in this category with its exceptionally easy setup that is assisted by the unit’s built in wireless technology.

Built in wireless capabilities make the unit a great selection for the home office, as running wires through home walls is not required to connect a number of rooms to the printer. A basic USB 2.0 port is also included in the hardware for those who prefer the single PC hosting type setup.

Print resolution can be set up to true 1200 x 1200 dots per inch when printing in black and white and color prints can be cranked all the way up to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch, allowing for what is pretty much photo quality output. Using compatible glossy photo paper will further increase the effectiveness of the Lexmark X4850 as a photo printer.

Additionally, the Lexmark X4850 is equipped with a little 2.4 inch display screen that furthers the device’s usefulness as a photo printer. This preview screen allows the unit to produce stand alone prints from connected cameras or other storage devices. Menu navigation is also made that much simpler with an easy to follow view screen system. A surprising amount of flash memory types are compatible with the unit and they include Compact Flash, Memory Stick PRO, standard Memeory Stick, xD-Picture Card, SD card, MultiMedia Card, and even IBM Microdrive types.

Photo printing is not the only thing that the Lexmark X4850 is good for, however, as the device is also a fully equipped scanner and copy machine. Unfortunately, copy speeds take a small dive down from the unit’s print speeds. Copies can be made at rates of 27 copies per minute when reproducing in black and white and only 21 copies per minute in color. The unit includes reduction an enlargement capabilities, but not much else in the realm of copying.

On top of standard letter and legal sized paper, the Lexmark X4850 is compatible with a variety of special media types. Along with borderless photo paper, but unit can also print to envelopes, banners, cards, and iron on transfers for T shirt making.

Cons:

The Lexmark X4850’s optical scan resolution is only 600 x 1200 dots per inch. While the device can be set to interpolated mode that results in the ability to scan at 19200 dot per inch quality, this type of scanning is incredibly slow. The unit also only outputs a 24 bit color depth while its internal color depth is a full 48 bits.
