When do I Replace an Ink Cartridge in the HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer?
The HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer is equipped with four ink cartridges: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. The ink cartridges are consumables, which must be replaced after a certain, maximum number of new prints. You can check the model, status, expiration date, serial number, and the current ink level of all installed cartridges from the front panel of your inkjet printer by navigating to [Ink] – [Information] – [Ink Cartridges] – [Cyan, Magenta, Yellow or Black]. You should replace all ink cartridges, which have less than 10% remaining ink, in order to be avoided print quality issues.
The highly sophisticated system integrated in your HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer is constantly monitoring all consumables. The system will display an appropriate warning or error message on the front panel, if it detects an abnormality. All warning or error messages, which are indicating ink cartridges related abnormalities are listed and explained below.

• ‘’Cartridges error ’’ – The indicated ink cartridges are missing/not installed. You must make sure that all ink cartridges are correctly installed into the inkjet printer. The problematic ink cartridges must be replaced, if the problem persists.

• ‘’Cartridges error X’’ – The integrated monitoring system has detected a faulty ink cartridge. You must install a new ink cartridge of the indicated color.

• ‘’Cartridges will expire in days: X’’ – The indicated ink cartridges are near the end of their useful life. You should replace the indicated ink cartridges soon after the initial appearance of the warning message on the front panel display, in order to be avoided a non-operational mode caused by a faulty ink cartridge or various print quality issues caused by insufficient ink levels.

• ‘’Cartridges error Empty’’ or ‘’Ink cartridge replacement required’’ – The indicated ink cartridges are empty. Please install new ink cartridges of the indicated colors.

• ‘’HP is not responsible for damage from use of non-HP ink’’ – This message indicates that one or more of the installed ink cartridges are non-HP (non-OEM) products. You should select ‘’Continue’’, and then press [Enter]. No further actions are required.

• ‘’Problems detected in INK CARTRIDGES’’ – The automatic initialization procedure cannot be executed due to an ink cartridge related abnormality. You must replace all faulty ink cartridges.

• ‘’Unknown ink cartridges’’ – One or several of the installed ink cartridges are not recognized by the monitoring system as components approved by HP.

You should always keep a spare set of ink cartridges for your HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer in stock, but please remember to store all consumables in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations. The complete replacement procedure is included below.
How to Install an Ink Cartridge in the HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer
In the initial step of the replacement procedure, you must open the cover of the ink cartridge compartment, which is located on the top side of your HP DesignJet 500 Inkjet Large Format Printer. Then, you must locate the exhausted/empty ink cartridge. Now, you must remove the empty/exhausted ink cartridge from the compartment by carefully pulling it upwards, and then unpack the new ink cartridge of the corresponding color. After that, you must insert the unpacked new ink cartridge into the corresponding slot, and then press [Enter]. Finally, you must close the cover of the ink cartridge compartment, and wait for the following message ‘’HP ink cartridges successfully installed’’ to be displayed on the front panel LCD.

Overview:

The HP DesignJet 500 is an outstanding choice for large format printing. It can be used to prodcue blueprints, electrical & sewage schematics, network wire runs, and grounds layout. The HP DesignJet 500 offers quality output for large format documents.


Pros:

The DesignJet 500 is a full-featured PostScript printing device that utilizes inkjet printing technology to provide detailed and accurate illustrations, for the end-user. It uses four separate inkjet cartridges (Black, Cyan, Red, and Yellow) and four separate print heads, to deliver outstanding images and text.

This printer is not light. After it is taken out of the box, it must be assembled by placing the main unit on top of cart assembly (it has wheels), and secured via twelve screws. When you are finished, the plotter can be moved into place and the wheels locked.

The DesignJet 500 does an outstanding job printing drawings from AutoCAD. Blueprints produced from autoCAD are clean and precise, with no signs of banding and the text was remarkable easy to read. Even small prints demonstrate no signs of jagged edges or smearing.

The DesignJet 500 is not fast. It can take up to ten minutes just to print a blueprint. Network controls are available that allow you to print from any device on your network. There are several options when printing with the DesignJet 500 such as economy or normal.

This device offers a lot of great features, but with a price tag of $3,000, the decision to purchase it should not be taken lightly. It has been designed to keep down operating cost thanks to the use of standard inkjet technology by HP.


Cons:

One shortcoming of the HP DesignJet 500 is that it doesn’t ship network ready. The cost of consumables isn't cheap either.
