Canon PIXMA MG5120 Review

Overview:

Every business needs a multipurpose device that will handle complex tasks with simplicity in today's era.  The Canon PIXMA MG5120 offers quality output in significant quantities in a short amount of time.  It is a multifunction printer that is designed to enrich productivity with its modernized technology.  With its 5-ink system, the output is good in quality.  The MFP incorporates a wide-range of technology and features that will be sure to complete the essentials of the office environment.  It deserves a 4-star rating, and it is suitable for varying SoHo environments.

Pros:

The Canon PIXMA MG5120 has a considerable amount of high-resolution at 9600 x 2400 dots per inch in Color and 600 x 600 dots per inch in Black.  It takes around 39 seconds to print borderless 4 x 6 photos, 9.7 images per minute in Black, and 6.1 images per minute in Color.  With FINE technology working in lieu of the high-resolution and print speeds; quality output is inevitable.  

The printer takes various sizes in media for output.  Acceptable media-sizes are U.S. #10 Envelopes, Letter, Legal, 8 x 10 inches, 5 x 7 inches, and 4 x 6 inches.  There is a large array of media types that work best with printer.  Compatible media-types are U.S. #10 Envelope, Canon Fine Art, Canon Matte Photo, Plus Semi-Gloss Photo, Glossy Photo, Plus Glossy 2, Pro 2 Photo Paper, Pro Platinum Photo Paper, High-Resolution Canon Paper, and Plain Paper.  These media types are made up of Envelope, Fine Art, Matte, Semi-Gloss, Glossy, Super High Gloss, and Plain Paper mediums.  It should be enough to cover most requirements of printing media in the office.  The diverse selection is good for people who do not want too much restriction on their printers for SoHo environments but enables those who need to expand on their artistic qualities.    

The MFP is quite handy with its flatbed scanner that incorporates a broad-range of features.  The resolution is spot on at 19,200 x 19,200 of interpolated dots per inch or optical 1200 x 2400 dots per inch.  Useful scan features include Automatic Document Fix, Push Scan, Gutter Shadow Correction, Auto-Scan Mode, and Scan to Memory.  Gutter Shadow Correction is particularly useful when users have to physically press a book on the scanner to ensure the dimensions of the pages are scanned accurately.  Sometimes, pressing down on the book will create a thick black line in the gutter-area of the document.  The gutter shadow is undesirable for most professional establishments.  A color depth of 48-bits internal and 24-bits external ensure the scanned document retains fine levels of color.  The color depth is an amount of bits used in a single pixel.

Auto-Duplex is beneficial for those who want to save on paper expenditure and contribute to the health of the environment by reducing waste.  Its Duplex enables users to print 2-sided documents or book-like media.  The Canon PIXMA MG5120 is easy-to-use with various, impressive connectivity features.   Modern memory cards can be used with the printer if DV camcorders, digital cameras, or mobile phones do not have PictBridge capabilities.  It is quite interesting for a printer of such magnitude giving the options of whether or not to use a computer.  Portable image devices can print its pictures directly from the printer without the use of a host computer.  This is where the LCD comes into play.  The LCD enables users to view their pictures and make appropriate adjustments without having to invest in a computer.  The Full HD Movie Print program allows users to turn clips into beautifully printed images with Powershot or Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras.

Cons:

While the Canon PIXMA MG5120 is one of the best in its class, it does have drawbacks.   The printer can be quite limited, in network-ability.  The only way to utilize wireless connectivity is through Bluetooth adapters.  It would be nice to see Wi-Fi incorporated into the machine.  The printer is not meant for mass-production of prints or photos.  Its features are directed to the home user or SoHo environment.
