Canon PIXMA MG8120 Review

Overview:

The Canon PIXMA MG8120 is a versatile printer that presents superior, quality output.  It looks beautiful in design and facilitates an ultra-responsive LCD interface.  The printer is fluid in operation and usability as users utilize the touch-sensitive screen.  Ideal for the SoHo or home office, its users will be surprised on the robustness of the design.  With a compact dimension, of 18.5 inches in width, 15.5 inches in depth, 7.9 inches in height, and 23.6 pounds; it will fit nicely upon any stand or credenza.  It comes with a standard 1-year limited warranty that also provides 1-year of toll-free technical support. 

Pros:

The Canon PIXMA MG8120 possesses extraordinary resolution of 9600 x 2400 dots per inch in Color and 600 x 600 dots per inch in Black.  Combined with FINE technology, it can dish out as small as 1 picoliter.  This is a significant difference in how detailed the series are when producing high-quality output.  It prints 12.5 Black images per minute and 9.3 Color images per minute.  This relatively impressive for such a small printer.  Canon offers a variety of media like Matte, Envelope, Fine Art, Glossy, High-Gloss, Super High-Gloss, and Plain paper types.

The essential copy features are incorporated on the printer.  It takes up to 15 seconds to print a document in color and considerably less than 15 seconds for text documents.  Auto Duplex Copy feature is available for those who need to copy 2-sided documents.  While it takes considerably longer to print originals, the copy-rate has the makings of a high-volume printer.  Things like Fit-to-Page, Fading Correction, Face Brightener, and Gutter Shadow Correction are pretty much automatic.  The Manual Color Adjustment is used for the more sensitive photo jobs and users who are quite touchy with their quality output, but at least Canon offers an option of doing so.  Users can print up to 99 pages on auto.

The scanner flatbed utilizes an optical 4800 x 9600 dots per inch and interpolated 19,200 x 19,200 dots per inch in resolution.  Thankfully, Canon has incorporated the automatic page corrections like Automatic Document Fix, Auto Scan Mode, and Gutter Shadow Correction.  In lieu of the wireless scanning, the scans can be sent across the network.  If the computer utilizes digital faxing, the scans can be used as fax material.

The standard network interface consists of a Wireless LAN, Ethernet, Hi-Speed USB 2.0, Bluetooth, card slots, PictBridge, and IrDA.  PictBridge is used to connect PictBridge capable devices like digital cameras, DV camcorders, and mobile phones.  It is nice to see Canon offer alternatives for devices, less capable in PictBridge functions, with memory card slots most imaging devices incorporate in modern times.  The bottom-line is this printer is concentrated on  SoHo and home office environments.

Cons:

While there is a wide-range of features, the MFP does not utilize faxing.  It does not make sense for the scanner to have capabilities to send documents throughout the network, but not have capabilities for digital faxing.  Digital faxing can be achieved through digital faxing-capable computers.  The copier has the makings of producing high-volume copies but not for printing originals.  It would be nice to see Canon make the printer function as fast as the copy function.  The printer can only print maximum sizes of 8.5 x 11 inches.
