Lexmark X125 Review

Overview:

Released in 2003, the Lexmark X125 was a truly unique piece of hardware. This color inkjet fax machine was capable of making copies, printing, and scanning, along with sending and receiving color faxes. Truly innovative at its time of release, the facsimile machine has aged quite a bit in its almost decade long existence, and is now pretty much nothing more than a novelty of the past, yet this device can still execute a pretty impressive print resolution which keeps it one step away from being a museum piece.

Pros:

A best print mode of 2400 x 1200 dots per in makes the Lexmark X125 one of the highest resolution color fax machines that can fit on a desktop, even to this day. It kind of makes you wonder what god-awful price Lexmark originally charged for this once top of the line device, or even what a refurbished unit could be found for online today. Other resolutions are attainable as well to help keep print speeds fast and they include a still very impressive 1200 x 1200 dots per inch, a 600 x 600 dot per inch mode, and a quick mode of 300 x 300 dots per inch.

The Lexmark X125’s weight of only 11.7 lbs make it light even by today’s standards, and its dimensions of 17.4 x 12.6 x 7 inches (W x D x H) are a little larger than one would like for a top loading inkjet fax machine, but still keep the printer within the desktop size range.

Scans can be done using the automatic document feeder at optical resolutions of 600 x 1200 dots per inch and interpolated maximum resolutions of up to 4800 x 4800 dots per inch at a grey scale of 8 bit and a color depth of 24 bits.

Cons:

The Lexmark X125’s print speeds top out at 16 pages per minute for monochrome in low resolution quick mode and 8 pages per minute in color. While a low print speed is pretty much to be expected from any device this old, especially a color one, it doesn’t change the fact that it is undesirable to own a unit that is this much slower than the current standard.

Copy speeds are even slower, clocking in at 12 copies per minute in black and white and 5 copies per minute for color. Copy speeds will, overall, also be limited by the mediocre 30 page automatic document feeder that sits atop the Lexmark X125. No document glass is incorporated into the unit as it relies on the older, top feeding fax machine style that was common before flatbeds were adopted as the industry standard.

The paper tray of the Lexmark X125 accepts a variety of paper types, but all in low quantities. Even standard paper can only be loaded into the machine 100 sheets at a time, while glossy paper and iron on transfer paper can be loaded up to 25 pages thick. Transparencies, envelopes, labels, and Hagaki cards can only be loaded 10 at a time, maximum.
