Xerox Phaser 5400DX Review
Xerox's now-discontinued Phaser 5400DX is a high-speed laser printer built with a high paper throughput and a feature set that would make it still quite viable for workgroup environments that need a fast black and white laser printer for various applications.
The printer measures 15.6" by 19.3" by 18.1" and weighs 60 lbs, making it small enough to fit on a desk or table but heavy enough to potentially merit its own piece of furniture, such as a printer stand or a credenza, to ensure accessibility and mobility, if necessary. The printer produces documents at a rate of 40 pages per minute with a first page out speed of 9 seconds, allowing it to quickly begin printing from an idle state.
The printer produces pages at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi and supports printing to Letter, Statement, Executive, A4, A5, and B5-JIS paper sizes. It can also process Monarch, COM-10, and C5/DL envelopes. Its maximum document size for custom documents is 11" by 17".
The printer ships with a 3-feeder, 1-tray system offering a 1650 sheet input capacity. A 2000 sheet high capacity feeder is available as an option to bring this number to 3650, well above industry standard and more than enough for many environments.
The printer includes support for Adobe PostScript 3, PCL5e, and PCL6 emulation if needed, as well as 39 resident PostScript fonts, 1 PCL bitmap typeface, and 80 PCL resident scalable typefaces.
The printer includes substantial printer management options. It offers support for CentreWare Web, CentreWare IS Embedded Web Server, and CentreWare Printer Management Suite, compatible with a large number of platforms, if desired.
The printer includes bi-directional parallel, USB, and 10/100Base-TX Ethernet ports allowing for easy networking or interfacing with either newer or legacy systems. Users with older systems may want to consider this printer if only for access to legacy ports, which could otherwise make it impossible to print from older systems in a non-network environment.
The printer includes an automatic duplex unit to allow double sided printing, though it lacks other paper finishing options available on larger, more elaborate models that may offer similar paper input capacities.
The 5400DX includes support for Edge-to-edge printing, Proof printing, Secure Printing, Draft Mode, Collated prints, N-up prints, Custom paper sizes, booklet printing, watermarked documents, fax-friendly black prints, automatic size sensing, cover sheets, point and print, auto tray select, separator sheets, IPP, send once/RIP once/print many functionality, job pipelining, load while run, variable fusing, jam diagnostics, and automatic tray switching.
The printer offers support for many operating systems, allowing for printing from almost every version of Windows (9X, NT 4 and onward are supported), most Mac OS releases (8.x onward and Mac OS X are both supported), as well as many versions of Unix and Linux.
The printer ships with only 64 MB of RAM, which can be expanded to a total of 192 MB using Flash DIMMs if desired. While this may be completely satisfactory, some applications may require a higher capacity than available here, requiring that you choose a newer model (which may offer upwards of 512 MB, if not 1 GB, of memory). The printer ships with a 6 GB hard drive, which is both very small compared to where hard drive technology is now (drives upwards of 1 TB are readily available in many systems) and an introduction of a potential failure point to the printer by adding more moving parts than may be necessary.
Despite its large paper capacity, the printer cannot be expanded to perform copier, scanner, or fax functions. |
