Brother MFC-410CN Review

Overview:

As an upgraded version of the popular Brother MFC-210C hardware, the Brother MFC-410CN was a small production upgrade with additional features including network capabilities. The unit carried all of the lower end model’s perks, including its low price, but also some if its weaknesses such as a very limited fax modem.

Pros:

With print, copy, scan, and fax abilities combined into a single unit, the Brother MFC-410CN lends itself nicely to a shared work environment or household, which is why the addition of the network card is a major perk when compared to the 210C. With built in Ethernet, connecting many computers at once, and even spooling print jobs simultaneously, is not only effective, but easy.

Print resolution is a strong point for the Brother MFC-410CN, as it is selectable up to 1,200 x 6,000 dots per inch. This allows for true photo quality printing which can also be done borderlessly when printing to standard photo sizes such as 4 x 6 inches. Pictbridge compatibility makes the job even easier by allowing users to connect directly from the printer to a digital camera for previewing and printing photos without the need for a host PC.

Other stand alone functions that the Brother MFC-410CN boasts are copying and faxing. Dedicated controls allow users to adjust copy setting directly on the machine itself, and faxing is made easy by these means as well. The unit’s fax page memory is capable of storing up to 400 pages of data, allowing for users to refill consumables in the event of a paper or ink outage without losing fax data.

With a paper tray capacity of 100 sheets, high volume printing is nearly out of the question for the unit, but basic, everyday use should move along quickly, and with decent refill cycles.

Cons:

With a print speed of 20 pages per minute for black and white and 15 pages per minute in color, the Brother MFC-410CN is a little slower on the draw than many of its more current counterparts. While its print speed remains acceptable for the home user, faster units are currently available for very little increase in price.

Like the Brother MFC-210C, the 410CN comes equipped with a disappointing fax modem. With a transmission speed of only 14.4 Kbps, the unit cannot keep up with the much faster units of today. Faxes will be sent and received at a rate of approximately 6 seconds per page, or about three times that of a Super G equipped device.
