Xerox Phaser 6140 Review
The ideas behind the Xerox Phaser 6140 were mainly focused on creating a no frills color laser printing device that could produce heavy volumes of color output at high speeds without the high cost of higher end color laser units. Its ultra basic styling and minimized controls let buyers know that this device is designed for performance and cost efficiency, not extensive features.
Though the Xerox Phaser 6140 is available in a networking model, the Xerox Phaser 6140n, the base unit offers very little in the way of connectivity, being supplied with a USB 2.0 port for single PC hosting. Expandability options include an external duplexor an additional paper tray. Standard paper storage comes in the form of a simple 250 sheet pull out tray and one additional 250 sheet tray can be attached to the bottom of the device. The output tray is capable of holding up to 150 sheets comfortably. When the optional duplexor is incorporated into the hardware, double sided printing becomes automatic and therefore much faster to execute than if done by hand. Two sided printing is also helpful in reducing paper usage by as much as half and providing a professional look and polish to manuscripts. The Xerox Phaser 6140 is designed to be user friendly, and print cartridges come pre installed. When it comes time for a toner refill, a panel on the right side of the device gives buyers easy access to OPC drums and cartridges that can be swapped quickly. Unfortunately, Canon does not supply full capacity cartridges upon purchase and the unit comes with “starter” toner instead. Still, with an estimated cost per page of 3.2 cents for monochrome and 17 cents for color, the unit could easily reduce ink costs overall. Print speeds run at up to 21 pages per minute for black and white and up to 19 pages per minute for color when operating at normal resolution. Unfortunately print quality is only selectable up to 600 x 600 dots per inch, so no photo printing option is available, but the device’s duty cycle suggests that the creators had high volume printing in mind instead. With up to 40,000 images per month allowable, the Xerox Phaser 6140 could accommodate the color print needs of many small offices, which is where the network ready model could be of great use, and the maximum paper size allowable by the Xerox Phaser 6140 is legal.
The Phaser’s on board memory is slightly limited considering its price range, and thus results in slow print speeds in some circumstances such as full page photo printing. A full page image can take a minute and a half to print in normal mode and up to two whole minutes in enhanced mode. Another major gripe many have had with the Xerox Phaser 6140 is an annoying design flaw that comes in the form of a protruding hump that prevents the unit from sitting flush against a wall. The hump in incorporated to allow for the accommodation of an optional duplexor, but those who do not opt for the additional hardware are stuck with the awkward body design. |
