Xerox Phaser 7300 Review
Xerox's Phaser 7300 is a high speed printer with an LED display that still offers quick prints despite its age, making it a potentially attractive model for someone currently looking for a pre-owned printer for whatever reason draws them to an older model.
The printer measures 26" by 18" by 24" and weighs 150 lbs, making it likely too heavy to be easily transported in many situations and to be placed alongside other equipment despite its relatively compact design. The printer will likely require its own credenza or a table built to withstand such heavy weights, and this will need to be considered when setting this printer up. The printer produces pages at speeds up to 30 pages per minute in color and 37 pages per minute in black. It has a first page out of 13 seconds for black and 16 seconds for full color prints.
The printer includes a 550 sheet standard tray and a 100 sheet multipurpose tray. A 550 sheet feeder and a 1650 sheet high-capacity feeder are also available as optional add-ons if necessary.
The printer prints at a resolution of 2400 dpi and includes an auto-thickness sensor, making it easy to get consistently good prints despite potential issues with paper quality.
The Phaser 7300 supports printing to documents sized A3, A4, A5, A6, B4, JIS, B5 JIS, ISO B5, US Letter, legal, tabloid, executive, statement, and folio. If you have the 7300N or 7300DN, it can also print to SRA3 and Tabloid Extra, and the 7300DT and 7300DX can also process custom documents as large as 12" by 36". The printer's multipurpose tray supports printing to cover paper, coated paper, labels, envelopes, business cards, greeting cards, and CD/DVD labels and inserts.
The printer has support for many different operating systems, including all versions of Windows from 95 onward, Mac OS 8 through 10, Novell NetWare from 3.x onward, and various UNIX and Linux flavors.
The printer supports Adobe PostScript 3 and PCL 5C emulation with automatic switching. It also supports 136 resident PS fonts and 46 PCL fonts onboard.
The printer includes a large amount of management software to be run in Windows, NetWare or in UNIX, which allows for printer management via software and usage analysis on systems that are networked.
Automatic two-sided printing is available with some 7300 models.
The printer includes 192 MB of RAM and can be expanded to 512 MB if desired. A 20GB hard drive is also available as an add-on, which can improve print times and store jobs for immediate retrieval without requiring a PC to do so. It is powered by a 500 MHz processor.
The Phaser 7300 includes an Ethernet port, a USB port, and an IEEE-1284 Parallel port for connectivity, making it easy to interface this printer into a network environment or with either newer or legacy systems, a convenience not necessarily offered by many newer printers.
Color controls exist for this printer in the form of Pantone-approved solid-color simulations, PostScript device-independent color control, CIE color standards, and support for both ICC and Apple ColorSync profiles. It includes Automatic color correction, Black and White, sRGB Display, sRGB Vivid, SWOP, Euroscale, Commercial, and SNAP settings if desired.
The Phaser 7300 requires a substantial amount of maintenance to keep running, according to some of its users. Older models suffer from skips, jams, smeared prints, failed fusing, and other issues that stop printed pages from being usable, causing downtime and frustration. This model has been replaced by the newer Phaser 7500, which may be a better choice for users looking to purchase an LED printer now.
