The Brother DCP-9045CDN is an all-in-one unit capable of printing, copying, and scanning in color. It offers a fair amount of options for expandability, making it potentially viable as a paper processing solution for a small office environment.
The printer measures 20.9" by 21.2" by 20.5" and weighs 83.2 lbs, making it heavier than Brother's similar black and white models and in line with many other multifunction units like this one. The printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 20 pages per minute and at a maximum resolution of 2400 by 600 dpi, consistent with most models like this one. Newer laser devices can produce prints at considerably higher speeds - upwards of 50-60 pages per minute in some circumstances - but for the home user or small office user this will likely be satisfactory.
The printer supports PCL6 and BR-Script 3, which provides PostScript 3 emulation.
The printer has a paper capacity of 250 pages, as well as a multipurpose tray capable of containing 50 pages. While this is only half of a ream of paper plus 50 sheets in the multipurpose tray, a relatively low number, you can compensate by adding a 500 page optional paper tray and a 150 page output paper tray, bringing its capacity to 800 sheets, more than enough for most small offices and certainly enough to satisfy home office or individual users. The printer also has a 50 sheet automatic document feeder for users who produce large multi-page scans or copies.

Its optional tray processes the same paper sizes; the multipurpose tray supports paper sized between 2.75" and 8.5" in width and 4.57" and 16" in height. The automatic document feeder can process documents sized between 5.8" and 8.5" in width and 5.8" and 14" in length.
The printer ships with 128MB of memory. This can be expanded to up to 640MB of RAM by adding a 144-pinn DIMM, though only one slot is available for this upgrade.
The printer includes an automatic duplex unit to automate double-sided printing.
The printer has a USB 2.0 port and a 10/100BaseTX Ethernet port, making it easy to connect the printer to most computers manufactured in the last 10-12 years and to most workgroups and networks.
The 9045 has a copier capable of producing documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi, as well as the ability to reduce or enlarge documents in a range between 25% and 400%, configurable in 1% increments. The copier can stack up to 99 copies, offers 2 in 1 and 4 in 1 copies, and can sort pages.
The 9045 includes a color scanner capable of a maximum optical resolution of 1200 by 2400 and interpolated resolution of 19200 by 19200 dpi. It offers 256 grayscale levels when copying in black and white and is TWAIN compliant. The scanner offers scan-to email, to image, to OCR, to file, to FTP, and to USB, as well as full-duplex scanning.
The printer supports secure printing and printing to a large number of network protocols with both IPv4 and IPv6. It also includes a large number of network management tools for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
The printer supports printing from all versions of Windows form Windows 2000 onward as well as Mac OS X on 10.2.4 or newer. Linux drivers are available for both x86 and x64-based environments.
Some users report issues with the printer misreporting the amount of available toner, leading to the printer demanding that cartridges be replaced before their actual capacity is exhausted. Additionally, some users report issues with the output tray having stacking issues, leading to large documents becoming unsorted due to paper curl and other issues. |
