Brother presents the Brother HL 2220 printer for home offices and small offices. It is a compact design that is space-saving, flexible, and reliable. It facilitates a stylish, gray design that features a monochrome laser. The printer stands 12.6" tall, 17.7" deep, and 18.5" wide. It weighs a mere 14.8 pounds.

Pros:

The compact Brother HL 2220 printer is effective for producing light-medium volumes. With the first print of the day taking only 10 seconds, the prints and copies are swift at 21 pages per minute (approximating to 2.8 seconds per print). For such a small device, it is inspiring that this printer can produce up to 8,000 pages per month, but Brother recommends a monthly duty cycle of between 250-1,600 pages. It produces decent quality output at 2400 x 600 dots per inch. For users that only need basic necessities of business letters, spreadsheets, reports, and other mono-based documents, this printer is a solid add-on to any small business environment.

The standard capacity tray holds up to 250 sheets of paper, which is surprising because of the printer's size. Users can throw in a whole ream of paper as needed. The printer runs on a 200 Mega Hertz process with 8 Mega Bytes of memory. The media types acceptable for the printer are Labels, Envelopes, Bond, and Plan. Various sizes of paper can be used with the printer's paper tray; B5, B6, A4, A5, A6, Executive, Legal, and Letter. For the manual feed, users can use B5, B6, A4, A5, A6, Executive, Legal, Letter, and custom-sized envelopes (3.0-85" wide and 4.57-14" long). The output tray can hold up to 100 sheets.

The printer comes with starter toner cartridges that can produce up to 700 pages and a DR420 drum unit that is good for 12,000 pages. For businesses that look to save money on the long run, the Toner Save mode can be utilized for the nonessential business documents. The Toner Save mode will reduce toner consumption, thus, decreasing the frequency of toner cartridge purchases.

This printer has been Energy Star qualified, which means that it meets the strict energy-efficiency guidelines mandated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Energy Star labels ensure that the device can help save more money than the devices that are not Energy Star qualified. This printer has received an average of 4-5 star ratings from consumers that have purchased the printer.

Cons:

The device does not facilitate any optional upgrades for paper management and memory. Users can't print in color. This printer is an ideal companion for pure-mono print environments, but other than that, this printer does not scan, copy, or fax. It would be nice to see Brother incorporate some other features like media card slots or an LCD. The printer does not have any resident fonts. Unfortunately, duplex printing is not available for this model. If you need something with more capabilities and network-ability, the HL 2270 or the HL 2280 are the better choices. The Brother HL 2220 does not have any useful networking features and is only interfaced with a simple Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.
