Sometimes the prints will have irregular black or white spots at 3.71-inch intervals.  This is a sign that the drum unit needs to be cleaned.  Follow the steps below to fix the problem.

Use an A4 or Letter paper.  Make sure that the printer's "Ready" light is lit.  Open the front and back-cover.

Note: Ensure that the green envelope-levers on the right and left-hand side are raised.

Press on Go five times and close the front-cover.  This will set up the printer's Drum Cleaning procedure.  The Ready light will turn on to signify that the printer is ready for the Drum Cleaning process.

Now, release the manual-feed slot cover.  Glide the manual feed paper guides, with both hands, to the width-size of the paper that is going to be used (either A4 or Letter-size).  Grasp the A4 or Letter-sized document with both hands on both sides, and feed the top-edge of the paper evenly on the paper feed roller.  The printer will pull on the paper, and at this instance, let the paper go.  The printer has now started the Drum Cleaning process (Ready light flashes during the Drum Cleaning procedure.

Note:  The printer will make a mechanical noise during the process (due to the rotation of the OPC drum in reverse).  It is not a malfunction.

Note: Don't close the face-up output tray during the procedure, as it will stop the printer's Drum Cleaning process and throw out the paper.

When the printer finishes cleaning the drum, it will return to Ready mode.  To ensure that the Drum Cleaning procedure is optimal, repeat the above steps while utilizing a fresh blank sheet of paper (always discard the paper after using each time).

Alternatives If Problem Is Not Rectified

There are some problems that cannot be fixed with the Drum Cleaning procedure, such as irregularities and impurities in print output.  This is especially true if there are foreign substances on the OPC drum.  Follow the steps below to fix the problem.

Switch the printer off and disconnect all the cables (including the power cable).  Let the printer remain off for 10 minutes.

Release the front-cover and remove the drum/toner assembly from the printer.

Note: Have a flat-surface lined with disposable cloth ready for the drum/toner assembly.

To remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit, push down on the green lock-lever.

Take the printed output that alerted you to the poor print and put it front of the drum unit to find the position of the foreign substance.

Once the position is located, turn the drum unit (the roller-type component) by hand while looking at the exterior of the OPC drum.  Ensure that you turn the roller-type component via from its left-hand side to avoid adding more impurities and foreign substances to the roller.

When the mark on the roller component of the drum is found, take a dry cotton swab and wipe-down the surface of the OPC.

After cleaning the drum unit, put the toner back onto the drum component (it will click in place).  The green lock-lever will raise if the toner is installed properly.

Reopen the front-cover and reinstall the drum/toner assembly into the printer.  Reinstall the paper tray and close the front-cover.  Reattach all the cables and turn on the printer.

Sometimes the pick-up roller of the printer will get dirty.  If the pick-up roller gets dirty, the printer's ability to feed paper can be hindered.   Follow the steps below to clean the pick-up roller.

Turn off the printer and disconnect the cables (including the AC cord).  Remove the paper-tray.  Remove the paper from the paper-tray.

Use a lint-free cloth that is has been soaked in lukewarm water and wringed out.  Wipe-down the separate pad to remove dust and dirt.  Wipe-down the two paper pick-up rollers that are inside the printer where the paper-tray used to be.

Load up the paper-tray with the paper, and put the paper-tray back into the printer.  Reattach all the cables (including the AC cord) and turn on the printer.

When replacing the printer's drum unit, the drum counter needs to be reset.  To reset the drum counter, follow the guidelines below.

Leave the printer on for 10 minutes and make sure the Drum light is flashing.  Open the cover that is above the paper tray on the front of the printer and take out the toner and drum assembly.
To remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit, press down on the green lock lever.  Have the new drum unit handy and unpacked.

Plug the toner cartridge into the new drum unit.  It will lock in-place if the toner is installed correctly (the green lever will raise).

When the drum and toner are assembled, place the components into the machine, but do not close the front-cover.

At this point, press down and hold the Go button for roughly four seconds, or until the four LED lights are lit.  When the four LED lights are on, release the Go button.

Note: Don't reset the drum counter when the toner cartridge is the only component being replaced.

Now, close the front-cover and ensure that the Drum LED light is off.
 

It is essential to clean and maintain the Brother HL 2230 printer to ensure that it will work at its peak performance for a long time.  While cleaning the Brother HL 2230, ensure that a dry, lint-free cloth is used.

Note: To streamline maintenance, clean the printer every time that the drum unit or toner cartridge is replaced.

Note:  Don't use substances that are liquid, flammable, or contains alcohol or ammonia to clean the printer.

First, turn off the printer and disconnect all the cables (power cable as well).

Remove the paper-tray completely.  Use the lint-free cloth to wipe-down the interior.  Ensure that any paper and other foreign items is removed from the paper-tray.  Wipe-down the paper-tray.

After cleaning the paper-tray, put the paper and the paper-tray back into its original position.
