The lifespan of the drum unit installed in your Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer is approx. 25,000 pages at 5% coverage (1page per task). Please note that you can extend the useful life of the installed drum unit by printing 3 or more pages per print job.
The Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer is programmed to monitor the condition of the installed drum unit. You can check the drum life counter by selecting [DRUM COUNT] or [REMAIN DRUM] from the [MAINTENANCE] menu.
One of the listed messages and print quality problems will appear if the installed drum unit needs servicing or replacement.

The error message [CARTRIDGE ERROR] is displayed – The Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer cannot initialize the drum unit. You should try to solve the problem by removing the drum unit from the laser printer, and then reinstalling it. Please install a new drum unit if the error message still appears.

The error message [DUST ON DRUM] is displayed – The surface of the photoconductive drum is contaminated. You should try to solve the problem by cleaning the corona charge wire of the installed drum unit. To clean the corona charge wire, you have to take the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly out of the main unit, and then slide the blue tab of the drum unit across several times. After that, you must return the blue tab back to its original position, and then reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Please replace the installed drum unit if the problem persists.

The maintenance message [DRUM NEAR END] is displayed – The installed drum unit has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. Please install a new drum unit.

You have already cleaned the corona charge wire of the drum unit but one of the listed print quality problems still occurs.

You must make sure that the laser printer is switched on, and then open the front cover. Next, you must press and hold down the [GO] button until the message [DRUM CLEAR] appears on the LCD screen. After that, you must remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly by sliding it slowly out of the Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer, and then detach the toner cartridge from the exhausted drum unit. Now, you must wipe the scanner window with a dry, lint-free cloth, and then unpack the new drum unit. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must insert the toner cartridge into the new drum unit until it locks into place, and then insert the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the laser printer. Once the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly is installed, you must close the front cover, and then wait until the Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer completes the automatic initialization procedure. Next, you must switch the laser printer off, and then unplug the power cord. At this stage of the procedure, you must remove the paper tray from the main unit, and then wipe the outside of the machine and the inside of the paper tray with a dry, lint-free cloth. Finally, you must reinsert the paper tray, and then switch your Brother HL-5280DW Laser Printer on.
