Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540 Review

Overview:

Clocking in exactly 1 page per minute faster than its predecessor, the MF6530, the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540 boasts a still mediocre print speed of 24 pages per minute that, while competitive when the product was released, now seems sluggish for a fully functional laser MFP.

Pros:

The Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540’s print quality, while not mind blowing, is admirable for being one step up from the all too common 600 x 600 dot per inch text friendly resolution seen in many black and white units. The device is settable up to 1200 x 600 dots per inch which will create a noticeably sharper look to its output when it comes to text as well as business imagery such as line graphs.

The output tray on the unit can hold up to 100 sheets before overflowing and that device’s standard paper cassette can handle standard sized paper in the thickness range of 17 to 24 lbs. When thicker media is needed to be printed to, the multipurpose tray can be used for 15 to 35 lb. paper. While this is still not heft enough to handle card stock, most special media types will work in the multipurpose paper tray. The tray itself can hold up to 100 sheets of input while the larger cassette is good for 500 pages, or an entire ream of paper.

With full duplex capabilities, the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540 can not only print double sided material automatically, it can scan and copy it as well. With full duplex support, working with two sided paper becomes hassle free and can be a great way to cut down paper costs by as much as half. Additional savings can be had by taking advantage of the device’s 2 on 1 copy function.

When using 2 on 1, the printer’s don board memory allows the digital copy function to take two pages worth of scan data, shrink it to half size, and print both onto a single piece of output. The reverse can be done as well with 1 on 2, where a single page of input is blown up to spread across 2 pages of output. The min/max zoom ratios the copy machine can execute are 50 – 200%.

Cons:

While printing at 24 pages per minute is not unforgivable, it is a bit of a dated performance level when you look at the 30 page per minute plus standard of multifunctional units today, including ones made by Canon. Canon is a brand that is constantly rehashing their hardware to keep up with trends and the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540 has long been surpassed by latter generations of the printer.

Another annoyance provided by this machine is its 15,000 page per month maximum duty cycle. While this obviously represents a considerable amount of print volume for one month, it still seems to rub the wrong way in a market of 50,000 page printers that, costing as little as a hundred dollars, can out do the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF6540 as far as volume without breaking a sweat.
