Product Description
Toner Cartridge for Dell 1100 Laser Printer

This Toner Cartridge prints 3000 pages with an average 5% page coverage. The amount of pages can vary depending upon the amount of ink printed onto each page. (5% page coverage is a standard Dell specification)

This product comes with a 6 month Warranty against any defects (including free replacement). We stand behind our products 100%, as these are not manufactured by Dell.

Why toner? Why not call it ink? Regular ink dries quickly, which is why cartridges for inkjet printers do not last long. Laser Printers use toner, which is ink in the form of powder. A sealed toner cartridge can be stored for 2+ years prior to usage.

Replacing a Toner Cartridge in the Dell 1100 Laser Printer
The best way to determine when the Dell 1100’s toner cartridge is running out is noticing lighter than usual page prints. The printer will, eventually, simply print black white pages and, at this point, it should be obvious that the unit is simply out of toner entirely. It is best to keep a spare toner cartridge on hand so that when the current cartridge runs out unexpectedly, there will be little downtime wasted waiting for a new cartridge to arrive by mail.

To replace the cartridge itself, begin by opening the front cover of the machine. This can be done by gripping the handles on either side of the cover and popping the unit open. The cartridge will be clearly visible inside and can be easily pulled free of the printer by its handle. Always hold the cartridge by its handle when possible to avoid toner spillage.

With the new toner cartridge ready, open it from its packaging and store the old toner cartridge in this same packaging to keep toner from spilling. Shake the new cartridge gently from side to side and rock it back and forth a few times. This will ensure that the toner inside is distributed evenly.

A small piece of protective tape can be found just underneath the toner cartridge’s handle in the center of the cartridge. This tape MUST BE REMOVED from the unit before installing the cartridge. The cartridge can then be installed in the printer by locating the groves on either side of the printer that the cartridge is to slide into and then pushing it into place. I should snap into position and then the cover can be closed, also snapping into position.
Cleaning and Maintaing the Dell 1100 Laser Printer
Keeping the Dell 1100 clean is not beneficial to appearances alone. The device will operate better and for a longer lifespan if the interior of the unit is maintained as well as the exterior. When cleaning the printer, it is important to never use strong substances such as solvents that use alcohol as this could crack and damage the exterior and interior plastic of the unit.

Be careful to never touch the transfer roller that is found underneath the toner cartridge when cleaning the inside of the unit. With this in mind, it is a good idea to give the device a quick clean whenever the toner cartridge is being changed due to the easy access.

The exterior of the printer can simply be wiped down with a dry or damp lint free cloth. The cloth should never be so wet that water is going to drip down into the unit. The interior of the unit can gather dust as well as toner spillage and it should be cleaned periodically to avoid electrical problems.

If the toner cartridge is not to be changed, it still must be removed by opening the front cover of the device and pulling it out by its handle. Store it in as dark a place as possible, never in direct sunlight.

When cleaning the inside of the printer, it should be done with a dry cloth that is lint free. Wipe away any dust and toner that comes away easily, then reinstall the toner cartridge and plug in the power cord.

Dell 1100 Review

Overview:

Despite its poor print speed, the Dell 1100 is a viable option for those in search of a bargain laser printer that covers all the basics. This affordable device, however limited in performance capabilities, may be a good option for those looking for something simple.

Pros:

The low price of the Dell 1100 is really its major selling point. This unit is fairly bare bones in the way of hardware, and prints exceptionally slow for a laser printer, but does so with a low overall cost per page, making it an option for bargain hunters.

With a cost below one hundred dollars, the 1100 is comparable in price to an inkjet. Additional costs can include an extended warranty and a USB cable which is, regrettably, not included in the box.

The unit itself is compact and weighs only 12 pounds, making it very easy to handle or move around as needed. The printer is 16 inches long but is short, making it comparable to an inkjet device with similar specifications.

Resolution topping out at 600 x 600 dots per inch is basically just barely over the threshold of an acceptable minimum, but it does the trick. At this print quality, black and white text will end up looking acceptable, but detailed imagery and graphs, and especially things like line drawings, will look disappointing overall and, therefore, those who require a solid imagery printer or watermark printer should look for something more along the lines of a 1200 x 1200 dot per inch laser printing device.

Cons:

For some reason, Dell’s warranty for the 1100 is only good for 90 days, giving the device one of the shortest warranties on the market. Whereas usually you would see a one year or even three year coverage plan from Dell on a piece of hardware, this unit, possibly in the interest of keeping costs low, is covered for only 3 months. Either way, Dell support on the printer is limited.

The 1100 is, sadly, not compatible with Macintosh setups and those who are working on a Mac who require something in the vein of this printer should take a look at the Brother HL-2040 which is similar in many ways but can also be used with Mac OS.

With an exposed paper tray, the stack of paper that sits in the machine is completely open to dust and any other environmental hazards that might be in the air. It is always preferable to have a paper tray that closes and conceals the input material, this way you do not end up with folds on the edge of pieces of paper and a layer of dust settling on top of one piece, then being fed through the machine.

While not a complete game ender, the paper tray on top of the unit it still a little disappointing with its mere 50 sheet capacity. If users try to crank out a larger project than the tray can handle, they will end up dealing with an annoying paper spill.
