Dell 1230C Review

Overview:

With a surprisingly high cost per page, the Dell 1230C may be ultra affordable up front but, in the long run, will cost more to operate than similar printers. The device from Dell is fairly straight forward, nice looking color laser printer similar to the Samsung CLP-315 that, other than its questionable cpp, is worth taking a look at.

Pros:

The Dell 1230C is one of those rare devices that is both a color laser printer and is small enough to be called a personal printer or desktop printer. This non-network ready device would be perfect for the individual user who needs to add a splash of color to their workload at a reasonable price.

Its footprint of only 15.3 x 12.3 inches (W x D) make it comparable to an inkjet in size, and its 9.6 inch height ensures that it can just as easily squeeze under as desk as on one. Its light 24 pound weight is another reason the unit is great as a personal piece because it is easy enough for one person to move around that neither the user nor the device will be in danger upon transportation.

The resolution for monochrome printing is the same for that of color, and they are both exceptional. Printing at 2400 x 600 dots per inch, very impressive looking photos and business imagery such as graphs can be printed from this device. When dealing with color laser printers, it is always best to seek out high print quality, and the Dell 1230C delivers.

Cons:

One element about the Dell 1230C that stands out a lot is its very high cost per page estimate. While units from Dell as well as other brands sometimes boast black and white printed page costs below 3 and even 2 cents, the 1230C estimates a much higher cost of 4.5 cents. Color prints, though always higher in price, are a little too much so for this device and Dell believes the unit will operate at 21.8 cents per page when printing in color. If printing something with considerable amounts of ink, like a full page photo, the costs will go up accordingly.

Limitations such as un-expandable memory are found in this affordable unit, and the built in 32 MBs will just not be enough to handle large image printing without considerable slowdown. Another big, big letdown from Dell is that this device does not include a manual feed slot. Only the standard paper tray is available. This means that many of the special media types that you really would want a color printer for, such as a custom made card, are not compatible with this unit.

Now, this is not to say that the Dell 1230C is not compatible with all special media types, as many of them can be loaded into the single 150 sheet paper tray, but users will have to unload their normal paper supply when doing so and extra thick media cannot be fed by the tray. The strange panel lurking on top of the device is for opening up the paper path for these thicker media types, but a manual feed slot would have been preferable.
