The user will have to be the judge of when it is time to replace the ribbon on the Epson TM-295 printer as there are no warning lights or alert screens to tell you. When the printouts from the machine become too light to be read comfortably or start to look unprofessional, it is time to discard the old ribbon cartridge and install a new one.

Begin by turning the printer on by pressing its power switch, then press the RELEASE button and the release light will come on. The printer is not in release mode but IT MUST BE TURNED OFF AGAIN BEFORE REPLACING THE RIBBON. If you do not turn the printer off before attempting to replace the ribbon, the print head may be moved mechanically, thus damaging the machine.

To open the cover of the printer, first press the ridges found on the top left of the cover, then pull the cover open. If you open the printer and find that the ribbon is not in release mode, turn the printer on and try pressing release again, then turn the printer off.

The old ribbon can be pulled out of the machine by its small handle in the center of the cartridge. Discard this ribbon through a recycling program and open the packaging on a new one. Make sure that the ribbon in the new cartridge does not have any creases or twists and turn the feed knob so that the ribbon itself is pulled taught. Only turn the knob in the direction indicated by the arrow on the cartridge or the ribbon may be rendered useless.

Press the ribbon cassette into the printer in the position that the old one was it. It must be placed in position perfectly or it will not snap into place. If done correctly, the right side will slide into place and then the left side of the cartridge will snap into position so that it does not fall out on its own.

Align the left side of the cover first, and then press the bottom and top of the cover into place so that it clicks into position.

Unlike the ink ribbon, the paper for the Epson TM-295 comes with a warning when it runs out. The PAPER OUT light will blink, letting you know when it is time to change the unit’s paper supply.

Be sure that a good ribbon cassette is installed BEFORE installing paper. Turn the printer on (the POWER light should come on) and press the RELEASE button as you would to install a new ink ribbon. The release light will come on and the printer does not need to be turned off to insert paper.

This unique printer accepts paper from both the front and the side of the unit, depending on which part of the paper needs to be printed to. Slide the paper from either way into position until it comes to rest against the paper stopper. There are markings on the printer for standard sized paper as well. If paper is installed correctly, the PAPER OUT light will go out.
