HP Color LaserJet CP5220 Review

Overview:

The HP Color LaserJet CP5220 is a color laser printer perfect for work in small business', restaurants and IT environments. The CP5220 is the most affordable B-size color laser jet printer from HP. The printer can be used to print small business flyers, IT reports, restaurant menus, small business coupons or what ever you can think of to help your business.

Pros:

The CP5220 uses HP's energy saving Auto-Off technology. When the printer is not in use and there is no activity, the printer will automatically adjust the power settings so users can save energy. The CP5220 also uses HP's Instant-On technology which allows prints to be made using 50% less energy compared to standard laser printers.

The CP5220 can print in black and white with a quality of 600 X 600 DPI and a color quality of 600 X 600 DPI. High quality business documents can be printed as wells post cards. Media sizes can be used as small as 3” X 5” inches to as big as 12” X 18” inches.
To achieve the high quality color prints HP ColorSphere toners are used.

The standard media size supports almost all paper size and media variety.

The CP5220 supports several different media types such as brochure, bond, colored, photo, plain, glossy, letterhead, preprinted, and prepunched paper. Cardstock, glossy film, transparencies, labels, and envelopes are also supported media types.

The print speed for both black and white and for color is 20 ppm, the first sheet can be printed in as fast as 17 seconds! The printer can print up to 75,000 pages a month however, it is highly recommended by HP that 1500 to 5000 pages are printed each month. For more productive business' the printer can hold up to 850 sheets of paper in its input tray.

The CP5220 weighs 88 pounds with dimensions of 545 x 599 x 338 mm. The printer has a standard DDR2 DIMM memory with 1 slot and can hold up to 448 MB of memory. The processing speed of the printer is 540 MHz. Print languages that can be used are HP PCL 5c, HP PCL 6, HP Postscript level 3 technique.

The printer is both Windows and Macintosh supported so Mac users looking for a laser printer have no worry. For those that use Linux, the CP5220 can be made to run on Linux as well.

The printer is simple and easy to use, for those new around laser printers the backlit display is easy to read and has Asian Character support programmed as well.

A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port is used for standard connectivity, optional connectivity can be used with HP Jetdirect ew2500 802.11b/g Wireless Print Host J8021A. As well as use of HP's embedded web server.

Cartridges for the CP5220 are fairly cheap compared to most laser printers with the black ink cartridge retailing around $143 and the HP's cyan, yellow and magenta cartridges retailing around $255. For average retail of the CP5220 printer expect to pay around $1500 to $1600 for the unit itself.

Cons:

The CP5220 weighs a bit heavier compared to most laser printers, weighing around 88 pounds. This makes the printer heavier to move and its 545 x 599 x 338 mm dimensions take up more space which means less places to put it in your home, office or restaurant.

The price tag of $1500 is not to expensive for a laser printer, however smaller business' on a tight budget may prefer to use one of HP's smaller, cheaper, laser printers to save money or settle for an Ink jet printer instead.

The cost of laser cartridges may add up over time, causing higher maintenance costs which this may prompt some small business owners to settle for an InkJet printer.
