OkiData C7550n Review

Overview:

Introduced in 2004, the OkiData C7550n is a network-ready color desktop laser printer capable of average print speeds with a substantive feature set. Though environments with large user bases and substantive daily paper throughputs will likely want to consider another model rather than this one, this printer will probably satisfy many individuals looking for an older model to print for a smaller number of users. 

Pros:

The C7550n measures 16.9" by 24.4" by 16.9" and weighs 105 lbs, making it consistent in size with almost every OkiData desktop color laser printer. It will thus fit on a dedicated piece of furniture like a cabinet or credenza without much inconvenience, but can also be stored on a tabletop or desktop alongside other equipment if practical for the workgroup.

The C7550n produces documents at a maximum speed of 24 pages per minte in color and 26 pages per minute in black and white, with a time to first page of 9 seconds in color and 8 seconds in black and white. It produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi, consistent with almost every desktop laser printer.

The printer processes a standard capacity of 630 sheets split between a 530 sheet standard tray and a 100 sheet multi-purpose tray capable of processing overhead transparencies, mailing label stock, and other documents up to 8.5" by 47.24" in size. If needed, the printer's paper capacity can be expanded by installing up to two 530-sheet trays, bringing the printer's capacity up to 1690 sheets total. Duplex printing is also available as an optional add-on if wanted.

The printer includes emulation support for PCL 5c, PCL 6, PostScript 3, and Direct PDF Printing to allow compatibility with a wide range of devices and allow for accurate document reproduction. It includes 136 PostScript fonts and 80 PCL fonts, as well as support for line printer, OCR-A, OCR-B, and USPS Zip bitmap fonts.

The C7550n's included drivers support Windows 9X through XP, as well as Mac OS 8, 9, and X from 10.1 onward. Linux and Solaris are also both supported. In network environments, the printer supports TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, AppleTalk, NetBEUI, and a number of other protocols. It also includes sophisticated color management tools, job accounting utilities, and OkiData's PrintSuperVision application.

The C7550n interfaces with devices using USB 2.0, IEEE-1284 Parallel, or the OkiLAN 8100e 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet print server. Users who require document storage can get it by installing an optional 20 GB hard drive, which also enables direct PDF printing.

The C7550n ships with 192 MB of RAM standard, which can be expanded to 1 GB if desired in order to speed up jobs.

Cons:

The C7550n's network features do not include the many options available on newer printers to provide encrypted printing and greater security. Additionally, newer printers have switched from hard drives for document storage to flash memory in the form of an SD or SDHC card, which is much easier to replace and transport in the event of a hardware failure.

While the print speeds offered by the C7550n are not at all bad and beyond the standard speeds offered by many devices, newer desktop laser printers can provide prints as fast as 30-35 pages per minute in black and white and slightly behind that in color, making it hard to recommend purchasing this printer if a newer one is available at a comparable price for your workgroup or institution.
